Error 1311 "Source file not found… data1.cab" when installing Adobe Reader 9 | Vista

Issue

When you download and try to install Adobe Reader 9 on Windows Vista, the installer returns the following error:

"Error 1311. Source file not found: C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Setup Files\READER9\Data1.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

Do one or more of the following:

Solution 1: Download the Adobe Reader installer manually.

Use this solution if Adobe Download Manager has been managing your download of Adobe Reader from the Adobe website.

  1. In a web browser, go to www.adobe.com/go/getreader.
  2. Click Download Now. Your web browser loads the Download Notes page.
  3. On the Download Notes page, close the Adobe Download Manager window if it opens. If a yellow or gold information bar appears at the top of your browser window, then close the information bar.
  4. Click the "click here to download" link in the text near the top of the page.
  5. If your web browser asks whether you want to run or save the file, then choose to save it to your Desktop.
  6. Find the downloaded file on your Desktop. (The default filename begins with AdbeRdr90.) Right-click the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Adobe Reader.

Solution 2: Temporarily disable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer, and then download and install Adobe Reader.

Use this solution if you have been using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or later for Windows Vista to download Adobe Reader from the Adobe website.

When Protected Mode is enabled, downloaded files are redirected to a secure "Virtualized" folder. This folder replicates the folder structure on your computer but keeps the files isolated to protect it from malicious software.

To disable Protected Mode:

  1. In Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Deselect Enable Protected Mode, and click OK.
  4. Close and restart Internet Explorer.

Important: Protected Mode can protect your computer from malicious software. Turn on Protected Mode again after you install Adobe Reader.

Solution 3: Use a different web browser to download Adobe Reader.

Use a different web browser--such as Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Opera --to download Adobe Reader.

Solution 4: Temporarily disable anti-virus software, and then download and install Adobe Reader.

Anti-virus software can interfere with the Adobe Reader installer. For instructions on how to temporarily disable anti-virus software on your system, see the software's documentation or contact its manufacturer.

Important: If you disable your anti-virus software, reenable it after you install Adobe Reader.
