Enterprise environments

If your enterprise is not prepared to install the latest Acrobat update, follow the steps below to resolve the specified Acrobat 9.4.2 printing issue.

Solutions for error: "Before you can perform print-related tasks..."

1. Download and run the AcrobatPatchApplication.exe file.

Follow these steps to download and apply the fix:

  1. Log in to your computer as an administrator.
  2. Click the link to download the AcrobatPatchApplication.exe file.
  3. Do one of the following to run the AcrobatPatchApplication.exe file:
  • Double-click the AcrobatPatchApplication.exe file.
  • Run the AcrobatPatchApplication.exe file in silent mode by specifying the -silent flag on the command line.

Example: <path of AcrobatPatchApplication.exe> -silent

A log is created in the temp directory (%temp%) with the name AcroPatchApplication942.log. Changes take effect only after you restart your computer. When run in silent mode, all dialog boxes are suppressed. No success dialog with restart recommendation is shown.

2. Replace the installed manifest file with an updated version.

Download the Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest file from the following link by right-clicking the link and choosing Save Target As or Save Link As from the context menu.

Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest

  1. Right-click the downloaded manifest file and choose Copy from the context menu.
  2. Click Start and go to Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat. (32 bit) or Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest file (64 bit).
  3. Right-click and choose Paste from the context menu. Choose Yes to overwrite the old file.
  4. Close the dialog box and restart your computer.

3. Delete or replace the atl.dll file in the Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest.

If you are using these steps on either Vista or Windows 7, edit the folders using full administrator privileges. To edit with full administrator privileges, try disabling User Account Control (UAC) for the system. Use the steps in the following TechNote for your operating system. Once you have accomplished these steps, reenable UAC.

  • Windows Vista:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404888.html
  • Windows 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975787
  1. Click Start. Go to Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest file (32 bit) or Computer\Local Disk (C:)\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Adobe.Acrobat.Dependencies.manifest file (64 bit).
  2. Right-click the manifest file and open it in either Notepad or WordPad.
  3. Press CTRL+F and initiate a search for “atl.dll” without the quotes.
  4. Delete the line containing atl.dll, close the text editor, and accept the changes.

Note: If you initiate a repair of Acrobat 9, repeat this process. The new file is overwritten by the old file extracted during the repair.

4. Set the Adobe PDF printer as the default printer.

  1. Click Start and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, choose Printers and Faxes.
  3. Right-click the Adobe PDF printer and choose Set As Default Printer from the context menu.
  4. Close the Control Panel and open the Print dialog box in Acrobat.
  5. Choose your printer from the Name pop-up menu and then click Print.
