When you try to open either an Adobe InDesign CS document in InDesign 2.x, or an InDesign CS2 document in InDesign CS, InDesign returns the error "Cannot Open File. InDesign Content Manager cannot open '[filename].indd.' Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."
Do one of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Install the upgrade.
To open documents that were created in a later version of InDesign, upgrade to that version. (For example, to open InDesign CS2 documents in InDesign CS, upgrade to InDesign CS2.) You can purchase upgrades from Adobe Authorized Resellers and from Adobe directly:
-- To locate an Authorized Reseller, visit the Adobe website at http://partners.adobe.com/resellerfinder/na/findreseller.jsp and choose your country or region from the pop-up menu at the top of the page, or call Customer Services at 800-833-6687.
-- To purchase an upgrade from Adobe, visit the Adobe Store at http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?id=catInDesign and choose your country or region from the pop-up menu at the top of the page, or call Customer Services at 800-833-6687.
Solution 2: Install the Adobe InDesign CS 3.0.1 April 2005 (CS2 Compatibility Update), and then open the document as an InDesign Interchange (.inx) file. (InDesign CS only)
To install the update, download it from the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads , or choose Help > Updates in InDesign CS and follow the prompts.
To open the document in InDesign CS, you must first export the document from InDesign CS2 as an InDesign Interchange (.inx) file. Features that are specific to InDesign CS2 (for example, footnotes and object styles) may be modified or omitted when you open the INX file in InDesign CS.
To export the file as an INX file:
1. Open the document in InDesign CS2.
2. Choose File > Export.
3. Choose InDesign Interchange from the Save As Type or Format menu, and then click Save.
InDesign 2.x cannot open InDesign CS documents. InDesign CS cannot open InDesign CS2 documents in .indd format.
The InDesign CS 3.01 April 2005 (CS2 Compatibility Update) update allows InDesign CS to open InDesign CS2 documents that are saved in .inx format.
