Overview

Extension Manager installs and manages extensions and plug-ins. Simply double-click an extension file to launch the Extension Manager and install the extension in a product. Extension Manager CS6 will display the Creative Suite CS6 applications you installed. You can see all of the extensions installed in each product by clicking on the product. Click on any extension to display information from the extension developer about the extension and how to access it in the Creative Suite point product. Extension developers have created numerous extensions to add new functionality to the Creative Suite products. The Extension Manager makes installing these extensions simple and lets you disable, update, or uninstall extensions.

New Features

  •   Extension dependency
  •   Extension set management
  •   Quick search
  •   Convert MXP to ZXP file
  •   Export Extension List

Extension dependency

With CS6 extensions can have dependencies. For example, extension A depends on extension B and extension C. The author of the extension can specify the dependency information in the MXI file (or manifest file for CSXS extensions), such as whether the extension depends on other extensions which need to be installed and enabled for this extension to work properly. Extension Manager CS6 supports dependency checks between those extensions. When an extension is installed/enabled/disabled/removed/updated, Extension Manager CS6 will check the dependency information and ensure that the dependency chain works.

Extension set management

  • An extension set is a configuration state for all the installed extensions in a product, where some of extensions are enabled while others are disabled. Users can define different extension sets for different workflows. There are also some pre-defined extension sets for each product. When you switch to a different extension set, Extension Manager will enable/disable extensions automatically according to the new active extension set, so you don't have to enable/disable extensions one by one.
  • Extension sets are created per product. Each product can have their own sets. For example, you could a new Extension set for InDesign called "Set1". You could create an Extension set for Dreamweaver also called"Set1" . However, the extension set will only apply to one product.
  • Extension Manager ships with three predefined sets, "All Extensions", "Required Extensions" and "Adobe Extensions". "All Extensions" means all installed extensions of a particular Creative Suite product are enabled in this set. "Required Extensions" means all required extensions of this product will be enabled and others will be disabled in this set. "Adobe Extensions" means that all extensions of this product that are signed by Adobe will be enabled and others will be disabled in this set. All three predefined sets cannot be edited. Extension Manager also has another built-in set, called the "Customized Set". This is the default set when Extension Manager is installed. This customized set is editable, but cannot be removed.
  • Except for the 4 sets above, users can create their own extension sets. User created sets can be exported as an XML file to be shared with other machines and users. Other users can then import this configuration set so that all users can share the same workspace.

Quick Search

In previous versions of Extension Manager it could be hard to find an extension, especially if you had a large number of extensions installed. Extension Manager CS6 introduces "Quick Search" improve the experience. Like search features in other products(such as operating system and web browsers), "Quick Search" provides a convenient way for you to find what you want quickly. Quick search does not just seach based on the file name but on various metadata tags. It supports several filters so that you can search the keywords in a particular category, such as extension name, author name, version or description of the extension.

Convert MXP to ZXP file

MXP files will be replaced by ZXP files going forward as they bring various benefits over the MXP file format. Extension Manager CS6 provides an easy way to convert them to ZXP extensions, you can find this option in the Tools menu.

Export Extension List

Users can export a HTML file to summarize all the extensions they have installed. This extension list contains extension name, status, author name and version information. This file can be also opened with Excel or other spreadsheet software. This list could be useful for comparing extensions installed on 2 different machines, troubleshooting and more.
