Introduction

Here is a list of issues related to fonts with FreeHand MX.

  • The fonts list isn't updating when changing printers (Windows)
  • Font list is slow to display (Macintosh)
  • OpenType fonts from Adobe are not displaying kerning (Macintosh)
  • Font Substitutions when printing (Macintosh)
  • Not all of my fonts are displaying in the font list (Macintosh)
  • Name of font is blank in the font list (Macintosh)

The fonts list isn't updating when changing printers (Windows)

This issue is specific to the Windows operating systems. If when opening a file you are presented both the missing font and missing printer dialogs you may run into a problem where your fonts are not displaying correctly.

This is due to FreeHand checking for fonts prior to checking for the printer. On the windows platform when using a PostScript printer you will have additional fonts available in the fonts list. So in the event that you receive a file from another machine with a different printer than your default printer you could see this. Another scenario would be if your default printer is a non PostScript (ink jet style) printer.

If you do receive both the missing font and printer dialogs you should do the following:

  1. Close the file and do not save the changes.
  2. Open the file.
    • When presented the Missing Fonts dialog select OK.
    • When presented the Printer Selection select your printer.
  3. Close and Save the file.
  4. Open the file once again.

This time you should not receive dialogs for missing fonts or printers.

Font list is slow to display (Macintosh)

In some situations you may find the font list displaying slowly on the Macintosh OS X. We found that this most commonly happens on multiple partitioned hard drivers, older version of Macintosh OS (10.0 and 10.1) and older systems that have a large numbers of fonts installed.

OpenType fonts from Adobe are not displaying Kerning (Macintosh)

On the Macintosh when opening files created in FreeHand 10 that use OpenType fonts, copying or cloning one of these text blocks will cause the text to shift or no longer display aligned correctly.

Here is a workaround for this issue:

  1. Using the text tool select all of the text from the problem text block.
  2. Select Edit > Copy.
  3. Now using the pointer tool select the problem text block and press the Delete key.
  4. Using the text tool start a new text block.
  5. Select Edit > Paste.

Font Substitutions when printing (Macintosh)

On the Macintosh with OS X; if you have font substitutions when printing you will need to change the location that the fonts are installed.

For more details, please refer to Font substitutions occurring when printing (TechNote 16742).

Not all of my fonts are displaying in the font list (Macintosh)

This is an issue on Macintosh OS X (10.2.x) and using the True Type fonts from earlier versions of the FreeHand's CD.

We have found that the age of these fonts causes the system to read these fonts incorrectly. Because of this no applications will see these fonts.

The one workaround that we found to resolve this was to rename the fonts by removing the .tff from the end of the file name. For example, myfont.ttf would be changed to myfont.

Name of font is blank in the font list (Macintosh)

This problem has been seen with bad or damaged fonts. One example that we have been able to reproduce was with the font TF Habitat. When a file using this font is opened no missing font dialog is presented. Then when you select a text block that uses that font the attribute list in the Object panel shows that TF Habitat is being used. Then selecting the text attribute from the list you would see the font drop down menu is blank.

There is no good way to resolve this issue. Most of the time we have found that the problem lies in the font itself. Reinstalling the font may resolve the problem, however in most cases you will need to use a different font.
