Some DXF files from AutoCad 13 or 14 will not import into FreeHand 7 or FreeHand 8.
Since FreeHand became able to import AutoCad files in version 5 for Windows, it has been able to import version 12 file formats, but not 13. FreeHand 7 trips over few file format changes and fails to even open the file. Still, many have successfully incorporated AutoCad 13 files in FreeHand 5 in Windows 3.1. That was accomplished using OLE. Since FreeHand 7 is no longer Windows 3.1 compatible, and since it cannot manage the new OLE 3 requirements in Windows 95 or NT, FreeHand 7 shipped with little OLE capability.
Note:The feature is improved in FreeHand 8 although some files may fail to open.
Solution
| 1 | Save the files using an older version of AutoCad or get a shareware file converter. |
| 2 | Upgrade to FreeHand 8. While it does not offer full v.13 file format reading, it will read the sections it comprehends and open that in FreeHand. However, there still may be a few files which FreeHand 8 even fails to open, but this feature has been improved. |
Note: In Windows, a utility named HiJaak Pro by IMSI can be used to convert DXF files into Adobe Illustrator 1.1 file types. On the Macintosh, DXF to Illustrator converts DXF files to Illustrator 1.1 file types; FreeHand can import and edit Illustrator 1.1 files.
