Although Authorware does not natively support MIDI files, it is possible to achieve MIDI playback in Authorware. Below is a list of solutions that provide MIDI support in Authorware:
- QuickTime Asset Xtra
The QuickTime Asset Xtra converts MIDI tracks into QuickTime format, which can then be inserted into an Authorware piece. Using this method requires the authoring machine and the end-users to have the QuickTime player installed.
QuickTime files can be imported in Authorware via the insert menu:
Insert>Media>QuickTime - UCDs and U32s
The "A5WMME.U32" is located in the Goodies folder of the Authorware CD and contains custom functions that provide controls for MIDI and other sound formats.
There is currently no Mac version (XCMD) of this UCD. - ActiveX controls
ActiveX controls that support MIDI can be used in Authorware to achieve MIDI playback. One example is the Windows Media Player ActiveX control.
Select the ActiveX control from the list:
Insert>Control>ActiveX
ActiveX controls are not supported on the Mac platform. - 3rd-party Xtras
Search for Authorware Xtras that allow MIDI playback, such as the DirectMediaXtra from Tabuleiro. Please check the availability of this Xtra from the Tabuleiro website at http://www.tabuleiro.com.
Consult the Xtra developers documentation for help on using their Xtra.
Note: 3rd-party UCDs, Xtras, and ActiveX controls are not supported by Adobe Technical Support.
