When running a packaged Authorware file, a user receives the error "Cannot locate external movie driver".
Authorware requires an external driver to run digital video files in a local or web-packaged Authorware piece.
The necessary XMO driver files should be included with the Authorware piece. The XMO file must be placed in the same location as the runtime file (not in the Xtras folder).
| Video Type | Movie Driver |
| AVI | a7vfw32.xmo |
| MPEG | a7mpeg32.xmo |
| WMV | a7wmp32.xmo |
| QuickTime | a7qt32.xmo |
| Video Type | Movie Driver |
| AVI | a6vfw32.xmo |
| MPEG | a6mpeg32.xmo |
| WMV | a6wmp32.xmo |
| QuickTime | a6qt32.xmo |
QuickTime MOV video will not play in Authorware unless certain Xtras are also present. MOV video requires QTAsset.x32 and MOAFILE2.X32 to be available in the Xtras folder. If the MOV is on the Internet, then NETFILE.X32 and INETURL.X32 are also needed.
In addition to the XMO driver files, the proper digital video playback application or system files must be correctly installed on a machine to play digital video in an Authorware piece. For instance, if a packaged file contains an AVI (Video for Windows) movie, a system must have Video for Windows installed on it. If the piece contains MOV files, then Apple's QuickTime Player must be installed on the machine. WMV files require that Windows Media Player be installed on a machine.
For more details regarding AVI playback, please refer to Playing Video for Windows in Authorware (TechNote 16053).
