Purpose

This technote formally extends support for Adobe Output Designer 5.7 to Windows 7 (32/64bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit). This note also explains the required procedure for the product to function properly.

Issue

Output Designer does not work properly if installed in the default directory, that is Program files for 32 bit and Program Files (x86) for 64 bit).

This is due to default security settings in Windows 7 and Win2008 R2 for the Program Files folder, Users folder, and Windows folders and its subfolders. The issues manifest when changing individual presentment targets (ICS files) such as adding a font or changing Font Setup. Changes made appear to work but are not saved. 

Solution

If Output Designer 5.7 is not installed or you can reinstall it in a new location, install Output Designer in any location except (Program Files folder, Users folder, and the Windows folders and subfolders). For example, install to C:\Adobe\.

If Output Designer 5.7 is installed and you do not want to reinstall to a new location, modify the security settings for Output Designer installation folder & Windows/fonts folder. The default installation location is Program files for 32 bit, Program Files (x86) for 64 bit. 

To modify the security settings: 

  1.   Change the read-only attribute of the folder (applicable only for the windows/Fonts folder): 
    1.  Open the command prompt with Administrator privileges (right-click cmd and then choose Run As Administrator).
    2.  Type “attrib –r –s c:\windows\fonts,” then press Enter.
  2. Ownership of the folder is provided to the current user:

    1. Locate the folder.
    2. Right-click the folder and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
    3. Click the Security tab.
    4. Click Advanced.
    5. Click the Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for Output Designer 5.7.
    6. Click Edit and select User from the Change Owner To list. Click Other users or groups and enter name of user/group. Click OK.
    7. Select User/group and click Apply and then click OK. (Select “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”).
    8. Click OK when the Windows Security Prompt appears.
    9. The Owner name has changed, click OK to close all Properties dialog boxes.
  3. Assign permissions to the user who intends to use Output Designer:
    1. Locate the folder.
    2. Right-click file or folder and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
    3. Click Edit in Security.
    4. Select User/Group from the Permission dialog box or click Add to add other user or group.
    5. In the Permission section check the rights “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.
    6. Click OK to close all Properties dialog boxes.
