Flash Publishing Settings Change When Creating a Flex Component (Flash CS3 and Flex 3)

Issue

In Adobe Flash CS3, symbols created for use in Adobe Flex must be published for Flash Player 9 and ActionScript 3. If your Flash project has different publishing settings and you create a Flex component from a symbol, the publishing settings are changed to Flash Player 9 and ActionScript 3. No warning message is displayed.

The changes in settings may cause the following message to appear:

  • WARNING: Actions on button or MovieClip instances are not supported in ActionScript 3.0. All scripts on object instances will be ignored.

Example

You create a Flash project with publishing settings of Flash Player 8 and ActionScript 2. You then select a symbol from the Library, and click Commands > Make Flex Component. The publishing settings of the Flash project are automatically changed to target Flash Player 9 and ActionScript 3.

When the Flex Component command is executed, the output window notes the following changes to the settings:

  • Changed player version to 9
  • Changed ActionScript version to 3
  • Turned on Permit Debugging
  • Turned on Export SWC
  • Set frame rate to 24
  • Imported FlexComponentBase component to library

Solution

This is expected behavior. Until the Flash CS3 IDE is changed, creating a Flex Component in Flash CS3 will change the publishing settings to target Flash Player 9 and ActionScript 3.
