Error 506 causes installation failure on Windows

Learn how to fix error 506 while installing or updating Adobe apps through the Creative Cloud desktop app.

You might see error 506 while installing or updating Creative Cloud apps using the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app. This error occurs when sideloading is disabled on Windows or the necessary permissions are not enabled.

To fix the error, work through the following solutions sequentially, proceeding to the next solution if necessary.

Note:

If you are using a company or school account, contact your admin before making any changes to your operating system settings.

Sideloading isn't enabled in Windows

Enabling sideloading in Windows allows you to install apps from other sources that you trust.

  1. Select the Windows search bar on the desktop and search for Developer settings.

  2. On the For developers page, activate Developer Mode.

    For developers menu of the System Settings displays the Developer Mode 'Install apps from any source, including loose files' option toggled on.
    If you see a greyed-out Developer mode option, you may need admin permission to edit it.

  3. Try to install the app from the Creative Cloud desktop app.

App installation settings aren’t enabled on your device

To enable app installation settings through the Group Policy Editor, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows search, type in gpedit.msc and then press Enter.

    Windows search bar displays the Group Policy Editor or gpedit.msc file.
    When you press Enter, a new window opens up.

  2. In the Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App Package Deployment.

  3. Go to the right pane and double-click Allow all trusted apps to install.

    A new window will open to display more installation options.

  4. Select Enabled, and then select OK.

    A new window displays settings for 'Allow all trusted apps to install,' including Not Configures, Enabled, and Disabled.
    Your changes will be implemented in the group policy editor settings.

  5. Now open the Creative Cloud desktop app and install the app again.

Windows registry may not have Trusted Apps enabled

  1. In Windows search, type in regedit.

  2. In the Registry Editor window, copy and paste HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Appx in the search bar, and select File > Export.

  3. In the Export Registry File window, select the location for saving the backup copy, and then type a name for the backup file in the File name field.

  4. Select Save to create the backup copy of your registry file. 

    Note:

    If something goes wrong, you can restore the registry using the backup copy.

  5. Navigate to AllowAllTrustedApps and change its value to 1.

  6. Install the Creative Cloud app again.
