Issue

When you try to import a WAV file into Flash, you receive the message, "This file type is not recognized."

Solution

Convert nonstandard WAV file formats to the standard PCM WAV file format. Most Windows operating systems include the Sound Recorder application, which you can use to convert incompatible WAV files to PCM WAV files.

  1. Choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Multimedia > Sound Recorder.
  2. Choose File > Open to open the WAV file  you are converting.
  3. Choose File > Save As.
  4. In the Save As dialog box, click Change.
  5. In the Sound Selection dialog box, select PCM from the Format pop-menu, then click OK.
  6. Click Save in the Save As dialog box. The WAV file is now compatible with Flash, and can be imported as normal.

Note: If Sound Recorder is not installed, you can use the same procedure with any Windows compatible sound editing software, such as Sound Forge (http://www.sonicfoundry.com).

Additional information

There are several varieties of WAV file formats. Flash supports the PCM format only. Unsupported WAV file formats include CCITT A-Law, CCITT u-Law, DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM), elemediaTM AX2400P music codec, IMA ADPCM, Microsoft ADPCM, MSN Audio, and GSM 6.10.
