What you learned: How to set up a new XD project

Understand artboards

Artboards in Adobe XD represent the screens in your app design or pages in your web design. When you start a new project in XD, you determine what size to start with for your artboards.

Choose a document size in the Start screen

With XD launched, you will see the Start screen. The Start screen is where you can create a new project from a series of default artboard sizes or a custom size. You can also access a list of recently opened files, UI kits, resources, and a beginners tutorial.

  • Choose a preset artboard size from the appropriate menu
  • For a custom size, type the values into the width and height fields below the Custom icon

Tip: By clicking the Custom size icon in the Start screen, you can start a document without any artboards. This can be useful if you want to create a series of artboards quickly or are unsure of the artboard size you need to start with.

Save your document

  • After your XD document is open in Adobe XD, you will want to save it. You can choose File > Save As, name the file, and choose a location for it.
