See how university student Lidia Gulyas uses Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Mix on her phone to combine handwritten text with her travel photos.
What you'll need
Add photos from your camera roll to Lightroom on your mobile device
Open Lightroom on your mobile device and either tap the Camera icon in the lower right to take two new photos with the Lightroom camera, or tap the Add Photos button in the lower right to select two photos from your device. Choose a photo to use as a background and a picture of handwritten text to use as a title.
Tap Add when you’re done.
Edit the background photo on your device
Tap All Photos. Then select the background photo to open it for editing in Lightroom. In the bar at the bottom of the screen, tap Light. If you’re using Lidia’s photos, drag the Exposure slider to the right to increase the brightness of the photo to about +1.50. Then increase the Contrast to about +90.
Tap the back arrow (<) at the top of the screen to return to your library.
Edit the image of handwritten text
Now, select the image of handwritten text you added to Lightroom on your mobile device in Step 1.
In the Edit screen, tap Color, and then B&W to convert to black and white. Now tap Light. Increase the Highlights and Whites sliders to +100, and reduce the Blacks slider to -100.
When you’re done, tap the back arrow (<) at the top of the screen to return to your library.
Add project photos to a new album
In the All Photos view, tap the three dots in the upper right and choose Select. Then tap on the background image and the handwritten text image to select them both.
In the options that appear below the thumbnails, tap Add To. In the Destination screen, choose an existing album, or tap the plus in the upper right to create a new album. With the correct album selected, tap Add in the upper right to add the selected images to the album.
Placing the photos for this project in an album will make them easier to access in Photoshop Mix.
Create a new project in Photoshop Mix
Open Photoshop Mix on your device and tap the + symbol to create a new project.
Tap Image, and then tap Lightroom. In Photoshop Mix, select the album where you saved the background photo and the handwritten text image in Step 4. Tap the background photo to select it and then tap Open. The background photo opens in Photoshop Mix.
Add a new layer
Next you’ll add a title to your background photo by adding the handwritten text image on a new layer.
Tap the + icon above the background layer thumbnail. Tap Image, and then tap Lightroom. Choose the album where you saved the handwritten text image in Step 4. Tap the image to select it, and then tap Open to add the photo as a new layer.
Blend the title and background photos
Tap the layer thumbnail for the handwritten text layer. Then tap the Blend icon near the bottom of the screen, and select Multiply. This will make white areas in the top image transparent, letting the background photo show through.
Tap the checkmark at the bottom right when you’re done.
Drag the handwritten text image to position it. Then pinch in or out, or drag the corners of the frame to resize this image so it fits in the center of the background. Tap outside the frame to hide the frame.
Crop the canvas
Now that you have your image set up, you can crop it to make the title stand out. Tap the Crop icon in the upper left, then select Free. Drag the white handles at the top and bottom of the image inward to crop the canvas.
When you're done, tap the checkmark at the bottom right of the screen.
Share your image on Instagram
Tap the Share icon at the top of the screen, tap Image, and then tap Instagram. Add a caption and hashtags, and click Share.
Tip: From the Share menu you can also send the image to your Camera Roll or back to Lightroom, or you can tap Open in Photoshop to send the image to Photoshop to add some finishing touches.
