Explore best practices for selecting surface and image anchors in Adobe Aero to jump-start your project.

Aero scans a space in Edit mode

A surface anchor is a trackable position in the physical environment that orients AR content to real world space so that content stays where you want it to stay.

Open the Adobe Aero app

Once open, tap the Create new icon (blue + sign) in the lower left corner.

Scan your space

  • Aim your phone camera towards any flat vertical or horizontal surface and slowly pan your view from left to right and track forward and back
  • Avoid surfaces that are highly reflective, lack contrast or texture and have balanced lighting

Tap to make a surface anchor

Once Aero detects a flat surface, you'll see little white dots aligned in a grid plane. Tap that grid to establish either a horizontal or vertical surface anchor. Once an anchor is established, assets can be imported into the scene.

Anchor experience to an image

  • Before importing any assets, you can switch the anchor type by tapping on the Menu icon in the lower right corner and then tap on the anchor text
  • Tap the Anchor icon and choose an image from Camera Roll
  • Tap the Done button

Try them out

  • Tap Preview at the top and aim your device camera at the real-world image you added in Step 4. Experiences will only be visible if you've imported assets into the scene.
  • If the real-world image is unavailable, tap View without image.
  • Remember that balanced lighting and flat surfaces with lots of texture are excellent places to scan.

Amazing! Now that you’ve set up surface anchors, it’s time to import assets into your scene.
