As of November 2015, Edge Animate is no longer being actively developed. For more information, see Edge family of products | End of development.
Audio
Make some noise with your Animate projects with the new ability to add audio to your compositions. Using the native HTML5 audio APIs available in all modern browsers, you can bind audio events to the timeline, add audio actions to your elements and create audio transitions for unique sound effects.
To learn more about how to get started with audio, see Add audio to animations.
Responsive Scaling
Making responsive Animate projects is now as simple as clicking a button. When enabled, this option allows you to scale your Animate Stage up and down while maintaining its aspect ratio based on the dimensions of the browser window or parent container.
Script Loading
Add your favorite JavaScript libraries to extend your Animate projects with the new script loading panel. Libraries can be imported from both local and online sources to be saved with your composition and packaged with published files.
Scale + Rotate Motion Paths
Enhancements have been made to motion path editing, allowing you to easily scale the size of a motion path and rotate it around the transform origin. Hover over a motion path to see the new commands, or press H to dismiss the overlay.
New Distribute Commands
New distribute commands are available from the modify menu to help with aligning and positioning elements on the stage. Select two or more objects and select Modify > Distribute from the menu to access various distribute options.
Stage Centering
Center your Animate stage within the browser window or whatever parent container it’s placed in. You can choose to center the stage horizontally, vertically, or both simply by selecting a checkbox in the properties for the Stage.
Transparent poster image for OAM
You now have the option when publishing an OAM file to save the poster image as a transparent PNG. Use this embedding Animate content inside of InDesign or Muse if you want a transparent stage to overlay the design contents of your document. Note: When using this option in an application that supports OAM files, the placed file will appear blank due to the transparency.
This feature currently is currently not compatible with PDF Folio types when publishing to DPS. To use a transparent poster image, choose Automatic, PNG or JPG Folio types.
CDN Publishing for OAM
Take advantage of faster loading of your Animate projects with cached hosting, now available with OAM publishing. Check this option if you’re creating Animate content with the intent of online use (Muse, Dreamweaver or third party uploading plugin).
New lessons
Two new lessons (Responsive Layout and Audio) are available for you to get started with some of the features available in this release. Check out “Getting Started” on the Welcome Screen, or Window > Lessons to view the lessons panel.
jQuery Update
Animate now uses jQuery version 2.0.3, updated from jQuery 1.7.1.
Source Map Support
When debugging Animate compositions using Preview in Browser or on the CDN you can now analyze the minified Animate and jQuery library code when using a browser that supports Source Maps such as Google Chrome.
This update of Edge Animate CC fixes compatibility issues with Internet Explorer 11 and is recommended for all users. Content produced with older versions of Animate will fail to run on IE11, and this update is required for compatibility.
To update your projects, install the Animate CC update available here and resave your project. To learn more about the issues this update addresses, please visit the Animate Team Blog here.
Motion Paths
The introduction of motion paths will allow you to add highly expressive motion to elements which follow along a custom curved path. This allows for emulation of real-world experiences through fluid, physics based movements not achievable through linear motion.
x/y translate is still the default method for controlling position. To control movement with motion paths on a per-element basis, select the “Motion Paths" radio button in the Properties panel. To set motion paths as the default method of movement for new elements in the composition, select “Motion Paths” from the layout defaults.
With motion paths applied to your object, create a transition as you normally would with keyframes or the Pin. You will now see a path drawn on the stage between two anchor points ready to be edited with curves. End anchor points are represented by triangles pointed in the direction of object movement.
To control the time of a motion path, add a Location keyframe to the Location transition in the timeline. This will create two separate paths with independent speed. You can also add easing to your path to control realistic acceleration and deceleration of movement.
Check the Auto-Orient checkbox to automatically rotate your elements as it moves along the path.
Swipe Gestures
You can now bind left and right swiping for elements for mobile-focused experiences. Swiping can be bound to any element inside your composition. Assign an action to a swipe event as you would for click, double-click, etc. through the Add Actions button for an element.
Optimized publishing with CDN Hosting
Benefit from faster downloads and easier-to-manage output with runtime hosting provided by Adobe via Akamai servers. Uncheck this option if your content needs to run offline or if you prefer to use your own hosting.
Templates
You can now load, save, and reuse templates from a template gallery. This allows you to load an Animate composition for common file patterns.
Access the templates menu from the Welcome screen (“Create from Template”) or from the File menu. From the templates gallery you can import, delete, and create a new composition from a template.
Saving a template will create an .antmpl file which can be freely distributed and can live anywhere on the filesystem. Templates can capture images, text, symbols, fonts, and any custom amendments you’ve made to the current composition. You can load templates from the visual template loader.
Element/Timeline jumping
The Elements and Timeline panels will now scroll to show selected elements if the panel is scrolling.
Eyedropper tool
The new eyedropper tool can be found in the Color picker popup. Select the eyedropper icon from the Color popup to sample colors from the Stage.
Color coding of timeline and elements
When you click on the color assignment for an element in either the Elements Panel or the Timeline, you can assign a color for easy color segmentation of objects. This will change the color assignment of both elements and timeline transitions.
Additional Zoom levels for the Stage
You can now control the zoom level of the stage to range between 10-400% for increased overview of your projects.
CSS Filter Support
The cutting edge of CSS capabilities is making an appearance in the Edge Animate.
CSS filter support for:
are available in the properties panel as animatable effects. Please note: CSS filters are a new addition to the CSS spec and support is only available in Chrome 18 and later, Safari 6, iOS Safari 6 and Blackberry 10.
Gradients
Apply both radial and linear gradient styling to your elements through the new gradient tool. The new gradients feature allows you to:
Advanced Typography with Edge Web Fonts
You can now browse the Edge Web Fonts library within Edge Animate and apply collection fonts to your compositions. Fonts can be browsed by style and added to the font library at the document level.
New Color Picker
Our color picker has gotten a refresh to allow for easier color editing.
New Color Modes
Colors can now be defined for both gradients and color using RGBa, HSLa and HEX.
Color Sliders
Color can be easily controlled and applied using new color sliders available in both the color and gradient panels.
Reusable swatches
Swatches can be saved and reused for both gradients and color at the document level.
Dimming of Locked
Elements Locked elements now appear dimmed in both the timeline and elements panel to easily distinguish between editable objects.
Iframe Friendly Preloaders
Preloading is now optimized to work within iframes for coordinated resource loading. Animate compositions contained within iframes can wait for the document to load before signaling the composition to execute, allowing polite preloading for advertisements.
Symbol editing mode preservation on Preview
No longer does your Animate composition return to the stage when previewing in browser. Animate will preserve your current editing state on each preview.
