What you learned

How to add a gradient to a layer mask
Create a layer mask. Then use the Gradient tool to draw a white to black gradient on the layer mask. The gradient adds black, white, and multiple shades of grey to the layer mask.

The effect of a gradient on a layer mask
The black part of the gradient hides content on the masked layer. The white part of the gradient shows content on the masked layer. And the shades of gray in between partially hide the masked layer, creating a gradual, soft transition between images.
