Transition effect timing can be modified directly in the Timeline panel or in the Effect Controls panel.

Settings specific to a transition effect can be modified in the Effect Controls panel.

Modify transition timing in the Timeline panel

  • Drag the end of a transition effect icon to change the duration equally on both sides of the edit.
  • Shift-drag the end of a transition to adjust the duration on just that side of the edit.
  • Drag a transition effect icon left or right to change the timing relative to the cut, while keeping the same transition duration.

Access transition effect settings

  • Select a transition effect in a sequence to access the settings in the Effect Controls panel.

Modify transition effect settings in the Effect Controls panel

Transition effect controls appear in the Effect Controls panel.

As with other effects, the controls are often specific to the particular type of transition.

Set the default transition duration

To access the default video and audio transition duration settings:

  • In macOS, go to Premiere Pro > Preferences > Timeline.
  • In Windows, go to Edit > Preferences > Timeline.

Replace a transition effect

When you replace a transition effect, the replacement effect is applied with matching timing.

  • Drag a transition effect onto the existing transition effect icon in the Timeline panel.

Tip: Set a transition effect to a long duration for a slow, dramatic visual statement.
