When looking in the Visitor Profile | Technology reports, you can see the browser width and height reports as well as the monitor resolutions report. These reports can be defined as the following:

  • Browser width: The width in pixels of the browser's viewable area. It takes into account scroll bars, and is altered if the window size is changed. This number is calculated using the javascript method document.body.offsetWidth for IE, and window.innerWidth for all other browsers.
  • Browser height: The height in pixels of the browser's viewable area. It takes into account the title bar and bookmarks bar, and can be altered if the window size is changed. This number is calculated using the javascript method document.body.offsetHeight for IE, and window.innerHeight for all other browsers.
  • Monitor Resolution: The width and height in pixels of the entire monitor, regardless of browser size. It is calculated using the javascript methods screen.width and screen.height.
  • Screen Size: Used only in mobile reporting. It is based on the mobile device's user-agent string, where it references a lookup table that contains screen size for each device.
  • Screen Width: Used only in mobile reporting. Same as Screen Size, only this report references just the device's screen width.
  • Screen Height: Used only in mobile reporting. Same as Screen Size, only this report references just the device's screen height.

Comparison of reports

  • Browser width/height and Monitor Resolution: These reports are not the same, as browser width/height is only the viewable area within the browser window. Monitor resolution is the entire screen, regardless of scroll bars or browser window size. Click the following button to see your browser width/height and your monitor resolution:

  • Browser width/height and Screen width/height: These reports are mutually exclusive from each other, as browser width/height is exclusively for non-mobile devices, while screen width/height is exclusively for mobile devices.
  • Monitor Resolution and Screen Size: Though these two reports display in essence the same thing, they are also mutually exclusive from each other. Monitor Resolutions report exclusively for non-mobile devices, and Screen Size report exclusively for mobile devices.
