About watermarks

A watermark is a visible embedded overlay on a digital photo consisting of text, a logo, or a copyright notice. The purpose of a watermark is to identify the work and discourage its unauthorized use. A visible watermark can't prevent unauthorized use.  But it makes it more difficult for people who want to claim someone else's photo or artwork as their own.

Another type of watermark is the digital watermark, which Digimarc Corporation pioneered. Digimarc offers a service for embedding digital code into photos and other media that is undetectable during normal use, but enables tracking and identification of the media.

There are three options for using watermarks with Scene7:

  • Sign up with Digimarc and then configure the SPS Image Server publish settings to allow Scene7 to add watermarking
  • Use the Basic Templating functionality in Scene7 to overlay an image or text on top of an existing image. It could be a (r) or (c) notice, the owning company's name or logo, and so on. It could be applied as an extra layer on top of all image urls, or using an image preset.
  • Have Scene7 Tech Support configure a special type of template, called a Watermark. Then, configure it in the IS Publish settings in SPS. Here is the Image Server documentation: http://microsite.omniture.com/t2/help/en_US/s7/is_ir_api/index.html#Watermarksl
