  • This page is designed to give an overview of basic handling when using the AEM author environment. It uses the Sites console as a basis.
  • Some functionality is not available in all consoles and/or additional functionality is available in some consoles. Specific information about the individual consoles and their related functionality will be covered in more detail on other pages.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are available throughout AEM. In particular when using consoles and editing pages.

Touch-Optimized UI

By sheer definition a touch-optimized interface allows you to use touch to perform actions. These involve actions such as tap, touch-and-hold, swipe. Whereas the desktop operates with mouse actions such as click, double-click, mouseover (hover the mouse over the appropriate item). The touch-optimized UI is fully operational on the desktop as well and supports the required actions.

Initial Opt-in (Analytics and Targeting and Usage Data Collection)

When you first login to a new AEM instance (using the touch-optimized UI) you will see a popup dialog that provides you with the option of configuring:

  1. The connection to Analytics and Targeting. See Integrating with Adobe Analytics and Adobe Target for full details.
    If required, you can configure the integration at a later time.

  2. Anonymous Data Usage Collection.

The Header

The header gives you access to:

  • Rail options
    The options presented depend on your current consoles. For example, in Sites you can select content only (the default), the timeline, references or filter side panel.
  • Breadcrumbs
    These allow you to navigate within a specific console; for example, through the levels of your website.
  • Analytics time period selection (List view only); you can select data from the last 30 days, the last 90 days or this year.
  • Create options (appropriate to the console/context).
  • Views
    You can switch between column view, card view, list view and the view settings.

Accessing Help

There are various help resources available:

  • Console Toolbar

    Depending on your location the Help icon will open the appropriate resources:

  • Page Editor

    The first time you edit a page a series of slides introduce the page editor.

    From the Page Information menu you can select Help to show this again at any time.

  • Tools Console

    From the Tools console you can also access the external Resources:

    • Documentation
      View the Web Experience Management documentation
    • Developer Resources
      Developer resources and downloads

You can navigate between the consoles using the global navigation panel. This is triggered (drop down) when you select the Adobe Experience Manager link (top left). You can use Close to return to your previous location.

Within a specific console you can navigate by selecting the appropriate resource and/or the breadcrumbs.

This contains two panels:

    From Navigation (compass) the consoles available are:

    Console Purpose
    Assets
    These consoles let you import and manage digital assets such as images, videos, documents and audio files. These assets can then be used by any website running on the same AEM instance.  
    Communities This console allows you to create and manage community sites for engagement and enablement.
    Commerce This allows you to manage products, product catalogs and orders related to your Commerce sites.
    Forms This console allows you to create, manage, and process your forms and documents.
    Mobile This console allows you to manage your mobile applications.
    Personalization This console provides a framework of tools for authoring targeted content and presenting personalized experiences.
    Projects (Welcome) The Projects console gives you direct access to your projects and is also used as the Welcome screen for the touch-optimized UI. Projects are virtual dashboards. They can be used to build a team, then give that team access to resources, workflows and tasks, allowing people to work on a common goal. 
    Screens Screens will allow you to manage all your customer-facing screens, of any size and in any location.
    Sites The Sites/Websites consoles let you create, view and manage websites running on your AEM instance. Through these consoles you can create, copy, move and delete website pages, start workflows, and activate (publish) pages. You can also open a page for editing. 
  2. There is a separate panel for Tools (hammer); here each option in the side panel contains a range of sub-menus. The Tools consoles available here provide access to a number of specialized tools and consoles that help you administer your websites, digital assets and other aspects of your content repository.

Actions Toolbar

Various actions are indicated by icons, with explanatory text, in the toolbar; these actions are dependent on:

  • The current console.
  • The current context.
  • Whether you are in selection mode.
    When you have selected a resource (e.g. page or asset), the icons available in the toolbar change to reflect the actions you can take on those specific items. 

Due to the space restrictions in some windows, the toolbar can quickly become longer than the space available. When this happens additional options appears. Clicking/tapping on the three dots (...) opens a drop down selector holding all remaining actions. For example, after selecting a page in the Sites console:

Quick Actions

In Card View certain actions, as well as being available in the toolbar, are available as quick action icons. Quick action icons are available for a single item at a time and eliminate the need for you to preselect.

The quick actions are visible when you mouseover (desktop device) a resource card. The quick actions available can depend on the console and context; for example, for a page in the Sites console:

Viewing and Selecting your Resources

Viewing, navigating and selecting are each conceptually the same across all views, but have small variations in handling, dependent on the view you are using.

You can view, navigate through and select (for further action) your resources with any of the available views - each of which can be selected by the icon at the top right:

Selecting a specific resource is dependent on a combination of the view and the device:

  2. Once you have selected a resource the top header is covered by the actions toolbar that provides access to actions currently applicable to the selected resource.

    To exit selection mode select the X (e.g 1 selected X).

Column View

The column view allows for a visual navigation of a content tree through a series of cascading columns. This view allows you to visualize and traverse the tree structure of your website and replaces the tree view of the classic UI.

Selecting a resource in the leftmost column will display the child resources in a column to the right. Selecting a resource in the right column will then display the child resources in another column to the right and so on.

  • You can navigate up and down in the tree by tapping or clicking on the resource name or the chevron (greater-than sign) next to the resource name.

    • The resource name and chevron will be highlighted when tapped or clicked.

    • The children of the clicked/tapped resource are displayed in the column to the right of the clicked/tapped resource.
    • If you tap or click on a resource name that has no children, its details will be displayed in the final column.
  • Tapping or clicking on the thumbnail selects the resource.

    • When selected, a checkmark will be overlaid on the thumbnail and the resource name will be highlighted as well.

    • Selecting the resource allows for further actions and displays its details in the final column.

Card View

  • Shows information cards for each item at the current level. These provide information such as:

    • a visual representation of the page content
    • the page title
    • important dates (such as last edited, last published)
    • if the page is locked, hidden or part of a livecopy
    • and, if appropriate, when you are required to take action as part of a workflow; markers that indicate required actions may be related to your notifications.
  • Quick actions are also available in this view, for selection and a few common actions.

  • You can navigate down the tree by tapping/clicking on cards (taking care to avoid the quick actions) or up again by using the breadcrumbs in the header.

  • Use the checkmark quick action to enter select an item for further actions. Then close the selected box to leave.

List View

  • Lists information for each resource at the current level.

  • You can navigate through the tree. Down by tapping/clicking on the resource name, up with the breadcrumbs.

  • Use the thumbnails to select/unselect individual resources (selection mode). Or the checkbox to select all.

  • Select the columns to be shown using View Settings:

  • Change the order of items (using the vertical bar at the far right of each item).

  • Show and Filter Analytics Data. For more information, see Seeing Page Analytics Data.

Timeline

The timeline can be used to view and/or initiate events that have occured on the selected resource. To open the timeline column use the rail selector:

The timeline column allows you to:

  • View various events related to a selected item.
  • Add/view comments about the selected item. The Comment box is shown at the bottom of the list of events. Typing a comment (followed by Return) will register the comment; it is shown when Comments or Show All is selected.
  • Specific consoles have additional functionality; for example, in the Sites console you can This are accessible via the up-arrow by the Comment box.

References shows any connections to the selected resource; for example, in the Sites console references for pages show:

  • Live copies
  • Language copies
  • Content references (e.g. content borrowed and/or lent by the Reference component)

Classic UI

The classic UI provides a selection of consoles, using well-known mechanisms for navigating and initiating actions, including click, double-click and context menus.

Upon login the Welcome screen will be shown, this provides a list of links to consoles and services:

Consoles - Classic UI

The main consoles are:

Console Purpose
Welcome Provides an overview and direct access (via links) to the main functionality of AEM.
   
Digital Assets
These consoles let you import and manage digital assets such as images, videos, documents and audio files. These assets can then be used by any website running on the same AEM instance.  
Launches This helps you manage your launches; these enable you to develop the content for a future release of one or more activated web pages.
Note: In the touch-optimized UI much of the same functionality is available in the Sites console, together with the References rail. If required, this console is available from the Tools console; select Operations, then Launches.
Inbox In many cases a number of people are involved in the sub-tasks of a workflow and each person must complete their step before handing off the work to the next person. The Inbox allows you to see notifications related to such tasks. See Working with Workflows
Publications This console gives you access to Media Publisher, an Experience Manager add-on designed for creating media- and publishing-related content.
Tagging The Tagging consoles let you administer tags. Tags are short names or phrases that you can use to classify and annotate pieces of content making it easier to find and organize them. For further information see Using and Managing Tags.
Tools The Tools consoles provide access to a number of specialized tools and consoles that help you administer your websites, digital assets and other aspects of your content repository.
Users These consoles let you manage access rights for users and groups. For full details see User Administration and Security.
Websites The Sites/Websites consoles let you create, view and manage websites running on your AEM instance. Through these consoles you can create, copy, move and delete website pages, start workflows, and activate (publish) pages. You can also open a page for editing.
Workflows A workflow is a defined series of steps that describes the process of completing some task. In many cases a number of people are involved in a task and each person must complete their step before handing off the work to the next person. The Workflow console lets you build workflow models and managing running workflow instances. See Working with Workflows.

The Websites console provides two panes for you to navigate and manage your pages:

  • Left pane
    This shows the tree structure of your websites and the pages within those websites.
    It also shows information about other aspects or AEM, including projects, blueprints and assets.
  • Right pane
    This shows the pages (at the location selected in the left pane) and can be used for taking actions.

From here you can manage your pages using either the toolbar, a context menu or by opening a page for further actions.

The basic handling is the same across all consoles. This section concentrates on the Websites console as it is the primary console used when authoring.

Accessing Help - Classic UI

On various consoles (e.g. Websites) there is also Help button is available, this will open either Package Share or the documentation site.

The Websites console lists your pages of content in a tree structure (left hand pane). For ease of navigation, sections of the tree structure can be expanded (+) or collapsed (-) as required:

  • A single click on the page name (in the left pane) will:
    • List the child pages in the right pane
    • Also expand the structure in the left pane.
      For performance reasons this action is dependent on the number of children nodes. With a standard installation this method of expansion works when there are 30 or less child nodes.
  • A double click on the page name (left pane) will also expand the tree, though as the page is opened at the same time this effect is not so obvious.

Page Information on the Websites Console - Classic UI

The right pane of the Websites console provides a list view with information about pages:

The following are available; a subset of these fields is shown as default:

Column Description
Thumbnail Shows a thumbnail for the page.
Title The title that appears on the page
Name The name AEM refers to the page
Published Indicates whether the page has been published and provides the publication date and time.
Modified Indicates whether the page has been modified and provides the modification date and time. In order to save any modification, you must activate the page.
Scene7 Publish Indicates whether the page has been published to Scene7.
Status Indicates the current status of the page, such as whether the page is part of a workflow or livecopy, or whether a page is currently locked.
Impressions Shows the activity on a page in number of hits.
Template Indicates the template that a page is based on.
In Workflow Indicates when the page is in a workflow.
Locked by Shows when a page has been locked and the user account that has locked it.
Live Copy Indicates when the page is part of a live copy.

Poznámka:

To select the columns visible hover your mouse over a column title. A drop-down menu will be shown, from here you can use the Columns option.

The colors next to pages in the Published and Modified columns indicate publication status:

Column Color Description
Published Green Publication was successful. Content is published.
Published Yellow Publication is pending. Confirmation of publication has not yet been received by the system.
Published Red Publication failed. There is no connection with the publish instance. This can also mean that the content was deactivated.
Published blank This page has never been published.
Modified Blue Page has been modified since the last publication.
Modified blank This page has never been modified, or has not been modified since the last publication.

Context Menus - Classic UI

The classic UI uses well-known mechanisms for navigating and initiating actions, including click and double-click. Depending on the current situation, a range of context menus (usually opened with the right-mouse-button) are also available:
