To create a cover that can stand up to any judgement, simply customize a professionally-designed template from Adobe Stock

Typekit is now Adobe Fonts.

Note: You’ll need the latest version of InDesign to see these enhancements.

Find a template directly from InDesign

Upon launching InDesign, click New or press Control+N (Windows) or Command+N (macOS). You can also choose File > New.

Select the Print category at the top and browse the templates that appear. Select a template and click Download. Then click Open. The template design opens in a new document and is ready to customize.

Missing a font?

You may see a Missing Fonts dialog box if the template uses any fonts not installed on your computer. Many templates use fonts that are available free from Adobe Typekit. To automatically install the font, simply click Sync Fonts and the type in your template will appear as designed.

Delete unwanted elements

With the Selection tool, click any objects you want to remove and press Delete. To delete partial text within a text box, triple-click the line of text, and then press Delete.

Customize the look of your text

With the Type tool active, drag across the headline to select it. Type your own text. You can replace longer text just as easily — simply select the text you wish to replace with the Type tool and paste text from your clipboard. The new text automatically uses the formatting specified in the template. Watch How to edit text to learn more.

Not the right style or size? Change its appearance from the Control panel at the top of your screen. Click the All Caps (TT) icon to change text from all caps to sentence case. Click the Font Size drop-down menu and select a different font size, or tap the up or down arrow to the left of the Font Size field until the title looks right to you.

To learn more about the type choices available to you, view Getting Started with Typekit and Creative Cloud.

Add a photo to your book cover

Select the Rectangular Frame tool and drag a frame around the entire front cover. Make sure it extends to the red bleed lines at the top and bottom.

Right-click and select Search Adobe Stock. This opens Adobe Stock in your browser. Alternatively, search Adobe Stock directly from your Adobe Creative Cloud Libraries panel. Choose Window > CC Libraries.

Type a search term in the search field. (Make sure you’re searching Adobe Stock. If not, select it from the drop-down menu.) In our example, we searched for “red shoes on grass.”

When you find an image you like in the search results, drag it over the selected frame and click to drop it in place.

To make the image fill the frame, right-click and choose Fitting > Fill Frame Proportionally.

To rotate the image, select 180° from the Rotation Angle drop-down menu in the Control panel.

Rearrange the design elements

You may notice that some design elements are hidden behind the photo. To make them visible again, you’ll need to change their order in the Layers panel. Objects in this template are placed on separate layers. When you isolate individual elements on layers, you can edit and rearrange them without disturbing other parts of your layout.

Choose Window > Layers.

In the Layers panel, click to open the Text layer group. Drag the Adobe Stock image layer to the bottom of the Text layer group. Open the Graphic/Design Elements layer group and Shift-click to select the top two layers. Drag to place them above. Now that the layers are in the correct order, you can view and access them correctly.

Change colors easily

With the Selection tool, click the tan-colored block around the headline. Double-click the Fill Color swatch in the Control panel at the top of the screen to open the Color Picker. Click the Eyedropper tool and drag it over the image to sample colors from your photo. Release your mouse and click OK to select the color.
