The Smart Tags feature augments the search capabilities of Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) by automatically adding metadata tags to image assets that you upload to a folder. The feature also lets you automatically apply tags in bulk to all assets within a folder.
Currently, smart tags are added to assets with the following mime types only:
- image/jpeg
- image/tiff
- image/png
- image/bmp
- image/gif
- image/pjpeg
- image/x-portable-anymap
- image/x-portable-bitmap
- image/x-portable-graymap
- image/x-portable-pixmap
- image/x-rgb
- image/x-xbitmap
- image/x-xpixmap
- image/x-icon
- image/photoshop
- image/x-photoshop
- image/psd
- image/vnd.adobe.photoshop
In addition, renditions for assets must have the following mime types only:
- image/jpeg
- image/pjpeg
- image/png
When you create a folder in AEM, you can enable automatic smart tagging on it to ensure that AEM automatically tags any image asset that you upload to the folder.

Navigate to the Properties page of an image. The applied tags automatically appear under Smart Tags.
Tags to which the smart tag algorithm assigns a high relevance with respect to the image are added. In addition, the algorithm applies a minimum confidence threshold for smart tags to avoid having too many tags for each image, which slows down indexing. This may not be the optimal threshold for all users. Adobe encourages you to inspect and curate the tags.
In the current example, the algorithm assigns a high relevance to the tags bag, backpack, and so on. AEM ranks the search results based on the relative importance of tags, which generally improves search results beyond what an inspection of the assigned tags of any image suggests. Any inaccurate tags often have low relevance so they seldom show up at the top of search results.
In the CRX repository, Smart tags are stored at a separate location from the tags that are assigned manually and do not interfere with the manual tags in any way. Therefore, there is no risk of interference (contamination) of the manual tags. Also, manual tags are assigned maximum relevance. This way, if images have manual tags that match the search query, they are displayed before smart tags matching the search query.

You can add tags to existing assets in the following ways:
- Setting periodic tagging cron job timer from Configuration Manager: To apply auto-tagging on folders that already contain image assets, use Folder Settings. In this case, only the images uploaded after you enable the auto-tagging option are automatically tagged. To apply tags on pre-existing images in a folder, separately configure a background job that periodically tags these images in batches. By default, the background job runs every 24 hours at 12:00 AM and tags image assets in batches of 1000. If necessary, you can modify the frequency, time, and batch size for the job.

You can enable Smart Tags on a folder from the timeline so Smart Tags are applied to any asset that it may contain. To enable Smart Tags on a folder, select the folder and then run the DAM Smart Tags Assets workflow on the timeline.
You can automatically tag image assets within a folder by applying the DAM AutoTag Assets workflow on the folder.
After you enable automatic smart tagging on a new folder or run the smart-tagging workflow on images in bulk, you can verify the augmented search capability by searching for image assets based on relevant tags that you haven't explicitly added to images.
You can curate Smart tags to remove any inaccurate tags that may have been assigned to your brand images so only the most relevant tags are displayed.
Moderating Smart tags also helps refine tag-based searches for images by ensuring that your image appears in search results for the most relevant tags. In other words, it helps eliminate the chances of unrelated images from showing up in search results.
You can also assign a higher rank to a tag to increase its relevence with respect to an image. Promoting a tag for an image increases the chances of the image appearing in search results when a search is performed based on the particular tag.
