Learn how to sync Adobe fonts, then use contextual alternates to finesse your typography.

Prepare your project

1. Download practice files and open "book-cover.indd".

2. Choose the Selection Tool and click on the text. On the Properties Panel find the Character section and click the dropdown arrow next to the font name.

3. On the font menu navigate to the top and select Find More to browse available Adobe fonts. On your keyboard press the B key, then two times the O key in order to find the Bookmania font family on Adobe fonts.

4. Select Bookmania Regular from the list, then click on the little cloud symbol on the right to activate it. Click OK.

Tip: Use filters to browse fonts by classification and properties.

Alternate glyphs

5. Back in InDesign, choose the Type tool, then highlight the first letter G.

6. Many Adobe fonts have additional glyphs you can use to beautify or customise the text appearance. If alternate glyphs are available, a blue underline appears with an in-context menu. Click on an alternate glyph to apply it.

7. To see all the glyphs for a selection, click the arrow in the in-context menu to open the Glyphs panel. Double click on an alternative glyph to use it.

8. Tip: Choose Entire Font in the Show menu to see all the glyphs available for the selected font.

Adjust Kerning

9. To do this quickly, choose the Type Tool and place your cursor between the characters to be kerned, then hold Option/Alt key and tap the left and right arrow keys to add or reduce spacing. Alternatively you can enter a numeric value or use the up and down buttons within the Character - Kerning menu on the Properties panel.

That's it! Now it's your turn to create a book cover in 60 seconds with InDesign. Download the assets or use your own and share your image on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #MadewithInDesign to get feedback and connect with other creative minds.
