View the system log to identify software conflicts

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Maintenance, and then, in the Administrative Tools section, click View Event Logs.
  3. Double-click Windows Logs in the Event Viewer (Local) pane.
  4. Select the System log.
  5. Note the following:
    • A white exclamation point in a red circle indicates that a service or driver is stopped or failed to start.
    • A black exclamation point in a yellow triangle indicates warnings, such as low disk space.
  6. For more information about an entry, click the entry, and read the General tab.

Note: For additional information about specific errors and warnings, note the Description, Source, and Event ID values. Then search for a solution on the Microsoft website at support.microsoft.com, or contact Microsoft or your hardware vendor for assistance.
