Temporarily disable a codec | Windows 7, Vista

Play Movie

  1. Choose Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and press Enter to start the Windows Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32.
  3. Double-click the codec that you want to disable.



    Note: Video codec listings usually start with vidc; audio codec listings usually end with an .acm extension.

     
  4. In the Edit String dialog box, add a semicolon (;) to the beginning of the value in the Value Data box to disable the entry. For example:



    ;iyuv_32.dll



  5. Click OK.
  6. Close the Registry Editor window.

To re-enable a video or audio codec:

  1. Choose Start, type regedit in the Search text box, and press Enter to start the Windows Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32.
  3. Double-click the codec that you disabled, and remove the semicolon from the beginning of the value in the Value Data box.
  4. Click OK.
