Last updated on Apr 28, 2026

Learn how to apply a gradient with the Gradient tool, and control how it looks by adjusting colors, direction, and transitions in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Select File > Open to select and open an image.

Select an area to limit where the gradient is applied. If no selection is active, the gradient will be applied to the entire layer.

From the toolbar, select the Gradient tool.

In the Options bar, select the gradient bar to open the gradient presets, then select a preset.

Select a gradient type: LinearRadialAngleReflected, and Diamond.

Select Dither to smooth the gradient and reduce banding, and Reverse to flip the gradient colors.

Click and drag across the canvas to apply the gradient. The direction and length of your drag controls the result.

Note

After you draw a gradient, use the Properties panel or Contextual Task Bar to edit it. The Options bar settings apply only when creating new gradients and do not update existing gradients.
