Change saved e-signatures in Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader

Change the e-signature you saved in the Adobe Fill & Sign tool.

Electronic signatures authenticate you as the authorized signatory in online transactions and help build customer trust. Depending upon your business scenario, you may want to change an e-signature to a PDF form for various reasons. It includes typos, changes in name or title, expired signature certificates, invalid signatures, or signatures not accepted by the recipient.

Change your e-signature in new Acrobat

Perform the following steps to change your saved e-signature in the new Acrobat:

  1. Open the PDF document or form in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, and select Fill & Sign  from the quick tools panel.

  2. From the signature dialog, select the cross (X) sign beside the previously added signature.

    Replace e-signature
    Select the X sign.

  3. To add a replacement signature to the document, select Add Signature.

    Select Add Signature
    Select Add Signature.

    Note:

You can only add one e-signature or initials at a time in a PDF document. You could circumvent that limit by creating a stamp with the signature and using it.

  4. Type, draw, or select a new signature image to replace the existing one. Then select Apply.

    Choose new signature
    Add replacement signature.

  5. To adjust the placement of your signature, hover over it until you see a plus icon. Then, select it and reposition it as desired.

  6. To adjust the size of your signature, hover over the blue circle at the corner and then hold and drag it as desired.

    Select Add Signature
    Select Add Signature.

    Note:

You can only add one e-signature or initials at a time in a PDF document. You could circumvent that limit by creating a stamp with the signature and using it.

  4. Type, design, or select a new signature image to replace the existing one. Then select Apply.

    Choose new signature
    Add replacement signature.

  5. To adjust the placement of your signature, hover over the signature until you see a plus icon. Then select it, and reposition the signature as desired.

  6. To adjust the size of your signature, hover over the blue circle at the corner, and then hold and drag it as desired.

Note:

Once you sign a PDF form, your e-signature is embedded in the document and can't be easily edited or removed. The security feature ensures that the document isn't tampered with after it's signed.

Resolve issues with changing e-signatures

Here are some common problem scenarios with changing electronic signatures and troubleshooting steps.

Selecting the cross or minus sign does nothing

If selecting the cross or minus sign beside the existing signature doesn't display a dialog, try double-selecting it. Hopefully, the signature dialog should be displayed. After using the method, verify whether the cross or minus sign responds when you select it.

The cross or minus sign is unresponsive when it's double-clicked or tapped

If the minus sign remains unresponsive even after double-clicking/tapping it, one or more of your e-signature files may be corrupt. Usually, the following files are associated with your e-signature:

Windows®:

  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\DC\Security\acrobat_fss_signature_initials
  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\DC\Security\acrobat_fss_signature_initialsi
  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\DC\Security\acrobat_fss_signature_initialsk

macOS:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/DC/Security/acrobat_fss_signature_initials
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/DC/Security/acrobat_fss_signature_initialsi
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/DC/Security/acrobat_fss_signature_initialsk

Identify the corrupt file and overwrite it with a new file. Then, close and reopen the Fill & Sign tool. You should now be able to replace existing signatures with new ones without having to reinstall the app.

Nothing seems to work

If your operating system is Windows®, try repairing your Acrobat or Acrobat Reader installation.

If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall your subscribed Acrobat app. You should then be able to change your e-signature.
