Work with the Direct Selection tool

Learn how to select and adjust points and segments in a path or a shape

Direct Selection tool in Photoshop

  1. Select the Direct Selection tool (A) from the toolbar. If you can't find the Direct Selection tool, click and hold the Path Selection tool () to show other related tools, and then select the Direct Selection tool.

  2. Choose All Layers from the Select pop-up list in the Options bar, or choose Active Layers from the pop-up list and select one or more layers on the layers panel. 

  3. Click and drag across the canvas to create a bounding box surrounding one or more paths or segments you want to select.

  4. Click on an anchor point or direction point to select it or hold shift to add or remove individual points to your selection.

  5. Adjust the position of the selection to modify the path.
