Error: A number is out of range while viewing PDF or deleting pages from a PDF

Error: A number is out of range

When you try to view a PDF or delete a page from a PDF, you see the error message "A number is out of range". You may see the same error message when you try to perform other actions on the PDF, such as combining it with another PDF or inserting a new page.

Solution: Export the PDF as a PostScript file and then convert it into a PDF using Distiller

The “A number is out of range” error occurs when Acrobat finds some problem with the underlying structure of the PDF file. The best solution is to get a new PDF from the owner. If you can't get one, follow the steps below to resolve the problem.

This solution works well for a PDF without interactive elements, such as multimedia or form fields.

Don't try this solution if the PDF has interactive elements; those elements may not work correctly after exporting the PDF to PostScript and then again converting the PostScript file to PDF.

  1. Open the PDF in Acrobat.

  2. Choose FileExport To > PostScript.

  3. In the Save As PDF dialog box, enter a different name for the file, and then click Save.

  4. Go to the folder where you saved the PostScript file. Right-click the file and choose Open with Adobe Acrobat Distiller.

Acrobat Distiller converts the PostScript file into a PDF file. The PDF file is saved in the same folder.

  5. Open the PDF file in Acrobat. Now, try to view the pages or delete, insert, or add a page in the PDF.
