Work with the Content Aware Move tool

Here's how you can use the Content Aware Move tool in Photoshop to move or expand selected parts of your photos.

  1. Select the Content Aware Move tool (J) from the toolbar. If you can’t find the Content Aware Move tool, select and hold the Spot Healing Brush tool to show the other related tools, and then select the Content Aware Move tool.

  2. In the options bar, do the following:

    • Use the Move mode to select and place an object in a different location. Use the Extend mode if you wish to expand or contract any object.
    • Specify the Structure value between 1 to 7 according to how closely or loosely you want the patch to reflect the existing pattern.
    • Specify the value of Color for blending, select Sample All Layers, and Transform on Drop.
  3. Select an area to move or expand the object and use the Move tool to draw a selection.

  4. Drag the selection to the area where you want to place the object.
