There are two methods for using PDF files as AEM Mobile articles.
- Upload PDF files directly – In the On-Demand Portal, you can upload PDF files instead of .article files.
- Export article files from Acrobat – After you install the AEM Mobile PDF Export add-on in Adobe Acrobat, you can upload PDF-based articles to the project you specify.
Both methods include the same options for displaying PDF articles. You can determine whether the PDF snaps to page or is smooth scrolling and whether paginated PDF articles are navigated horizontally or vertically.
PDF articles support links between pages and external hyperlinks. Other interactivity features such as videos are not supported. The PDF articles render optimally if defined in RGB color space and do not contain any hidden layers.
A PDF file cannot be larger than 2 GB or have more than 1,500 pages.
The most recent update to Acrobat DC (20050) can result in a crash when using the PDF Export add-on. To resolve this issue, download and install the new version of the PDF Export add-on.
When uploading the contents of an article in the On-Demand Portal, you can upload either .article files or .pdf files. When you upload a PDF file, you can specify options to determine how the PDF article is displayed.
Fit One Full Page to Screen – If you select this option, the PDF file fits to the screen either horizontally or vertically, with letterboxing or pillarboxing added as needed. The user can then swipe to snap to the next or previous page.
If this option is not selected, the PDF file fills the width of the display area. The user can then swipe to scroll smoothly through the article. A gray separator line indicates page breaks.
Enable Horizontal Swiping within PDF – If you select this option, the user swipes horizontally rather than vertically to navigate to different pages. This option is available only if the "Fit One Full Page to Screen" option is selected.
When you edit an article after uploading a PDF file, the PDF article options are no longer available for editing. If you want to change a setting, re-upload the PDF file.
- If you installed a prerelease version of the AEM Mobile PDF Export for Acrobat add-on, uninstall it before you install the current version.
The uninstaller is located at in Applications > Utilities > Adobe Installers (Mac OS) and Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Windows).
- Make sure that Acrobat DC is updated. Acrobat DC must be version 2015.016.20039 or higher.
- Download, uncompress, and install the AEM Mobile PDF Export for Acrobat add-on.
After you install the Acrobat add-on, you can upload PDF files as AEM Mobile articles to any project that you have access to.
Specify the article properties (see Managing articles in AEM Mobile).
The following options are available for PDF articles:
Fit One Full Page to Screen – If you select this option, the PDF article is paginated. If this option is not selected, the PDF article is smooth scrolling with gray separators between pages.
Horizontal Swiping Only – If you select this option, the user swipes horizontally rather than vertically to navigate to different pages.
Editing and replacing PDF articles
If you edit and upload a PDF that has already been uploaded, the metadata properties from the On-Demand Services will populate the properties dialog box in Acrobat. You can click Show Audit History to view the history of PDF article files that are overwritten.
When you use Bulk Conversion, each PDF article you specify will be converted as an article.
Bulk conversion uses the prefix of the PDF filename to create the Article Name and Article Title. For example, if the PDF filename is "Services_Draft.pdf, the Article Name value will be "Services_Draft" and the Article Title will be "Services_Draft." If your PDF filename includes characters such as spaces that will be illegal when converted to the Article Name, an error will result. Rename PDF files as necessary.
