Recover missing location tags after upgrading 13.3 issue

When upgrading your Lightroom Classic catalog to version (13.3), you may encounter issues with location-related information not being fully upgraded. This article provides step-by-step instructions on using a script to extract and apply geolocation data from synced images in older catalogs to the upgraded catalog.

You can use this script if,

  • You have upgraded your synched catalog from 13.2 (or older) to Lightroom Classic 13.3.
  • You have upgraded your synched catalog from 13.2 (or older) to Lightroom Classic 13.3 and then to 13.3.1
  • No action is required if you have upgraded your synched catalog from 13.2 (or older) to 13.3.1 (or later).

Download the Script

  1. Right-click (Windows) or Ctrl+click (Mac OS) the link below to download the script.

    Download

  2. Save the file to your desktop.

Install the Script

  1. Open Lightroom Classic

  2. Go to Preferences:

    • On macOS: Click Lightroom Classic > Preferences.
    • On Windows: Click Edit > Preferences.
  3. Navigate to the Presets tab and select Show All Other Lightroom Presets.

  4. In the Lightroom folder, create a new folder named Scripts.

    • If the Scripts folder already exists, skip this step.
  5. Copy the extracted “ExtractLocationInfo.lua” file and paste it into the Scripts folder.

Quit and then reopen Lightroom Classic.

Run the Script

  1. In Lightroom Classic, go to the top bar and select Scripts > ExtractLocationInfo.

  2. Choose the previous catalog

    • This is the catalog from which you upgraded to Lightroom Classic 13.3.
    • It's saved in the same folder as the upgraded catalog by default.
  3. Select Extract.

The script will extract and import the missing location data from your previous catalog into your upgraded catalog. Once complete, you don't need to take any further action.

Note:

  • This script only recovers location data for synced images.
  • The script will overwrite any existing geotagging edits made in the upgraded catalog.
  • Original GPS data (if available) will remain unaffected.
