Learn what to do if InDesign fails to launch or crashes when you try to use the Type tool.

Issue

If your InDesign document uses fonts with special characters in the font name, InDesign could crash during launch or when you use the Type tool.

Work through the following solutions in order. Stop when you're able to successfully start InDesign or use the Type tool. If you're still having trouble, contact us.

Update InDesign

Install the latest InDesign update, either via the Creative Cloud desktop app or directly from InDesign.

  • In InDesign, choose Help > Updates.

Sign out and sign in to Creative Cloud

Signing out deactivates all installed Creative Cloud applications and services, including InDesign, associated with your Adobe ID on that computer. The apps are still installed, but they're no longer connected to a valid license. Sign in again to reactivate the license and launch InDesign and your other Creative Cloud apps.

You can sign out and sign in using the Creative Cloud desktop app. Or you can sign out and sign in from within InDesign. Signing out of one Creative Cloud app deactivates all Creative Cloud apps associated with your Adobe ID on that computer.

Troubleshoot fonts

Remove or disable fonts with special characters in the name, such as Ithornët.

Mac OS

Run in Selective Startup Mode (Windows) or Safe Boot (Mac OS)

Try to start InDesign or use the Type tool while running in Selective Startup mode (Windows) or Safe Boot mode (Mac OS). If you don't experience a crash, there could be software or a service on your computer that conflicts with InDesign.
