Resolve Adobe Acrobat launch issues on Windows

Solve Adobe Acrobat launch issues where Acrobat does not open from the desktop icon or other shortcuts.

Problem 

Acrobat does not open when double-clicking on the desktop icon or using other shortcuts.

Solutions

Try the following solutions in the order given to solve the problem:

Solution 1

Close all the background processes and try relaunching Acrobat. 

To close all background processes, open Task manager and end all Adobe processes. Adobe processes start with Acro, Acrobat, Adobe, or Creative Cloud. 

Solution 2

Check if it's a licensing issue. Follow the steps:

  1. Launch the Acrobat Distiller app.

  2. Check if it shows the error Adobe Acrobat license has either expired or not been activated.

  3. If yes, follow the solution in Adobe Acrobat license has either expired or not been activated. If not, follow Solution 3.

Solution 3

Verify if Acrobat is running in compatibility mode. If yes, you must de-select the option and make sure that Acrobat does not run in compatibility mode. Follow the steps:

  1. Right-click on the Acrobat shortcut icon on the desktop and select Properties

  2. Select the Compatibility tab. If Run this program in compatibility mode is selected, de-select it and then try relaunching the app.

Solution 4

Check for third-party plugins, as it could be blocking Acrobat from launching. To remove the plugin:

  1. For 64-bit Acrobat, go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\plug_ins 

    For 32-bit Acrobat, go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\plug_ins

  2. Search for the third-party plugin file by name and move it to a different location. 

  3. Relaunch the application.

Solution 5

Check for permission issues.

  1. Right-click on the Acrobat icon on your desktop. 

  2. Select Run as Administrator. If it works, give permission to the Adobe folders following the steps in Resolve permission issues with Acrobat.

Solution 6

If an antivirus is blocking Acrobat, temporarily turn off your system's firewall or antivirus and try launching Acrobat. If it works, add Acrobat as an exclusion in your antivirus software. Check your antivirus or firewall documentation for guidance on temporarily turning off the antivirus software.

Solution 7

You might have to repair the Acrobat app. Follow the steps to repair the application:

  1. Go to the Control Panel and select Programs > Programs and Features.

  2. Search for Adobe Acrobat and select Change. In the Adobe Acrobat - Setup dialog box, select Next and then select Repair.

  3. Once the repair is completed, restart your device. 

Solution 8

Launch Acrobat in a new user account.

Try logging into another user profile on the same machine. If Acrobat works well in that profile, the issue may be related to your user profile. For further assistance, contact your operating system (OS) support.

Solution 9

Uninstall and reinstall Acrobat.

If the issue persists, collect process monitor logs using the steps mentioned here, and then contact support.
