Find quick answers to frequently asked questions about Develop presets in Lightroom Classic.

Presets provide a way to save a group of settings and apply them to other photos. Once you create and add a preset to the Presets panel in the Develop module, it remains there until you delete it. The presets also appear in the list of Develop settings which you can apply while importing photos.

How do I import Develop presets?

To import Develop presets in Lightroom Classic, do any of the following:

  • In the Presets panel [Develop module], click the plus (+) icon at the upper-right corner and choose Import Presets from the displayed drop-down options. In the import dialog box that appears, select the preset files or a .zip file containing presets. Click OK.
    In this case, all the presets are added to the User Presets group.
  • In the Presets panel [Develop module], right-click on the desired preset group and in the import dialog box that appears, select the preset files or a .zip file containing presets. Click OK.
    In this case, the presets are imported into the selected preset group.

How do I export Develop presets?

You cannot export built-in Lightroom Classic presets or preset groups. You can export only custom presets.

  1. In the Develop module, select a user or third-party preset in the Presets panel that you want to export.

  2. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the preset and choose Export.

  3. Specify the file name and click Save.

How do I migrate my Lightroom Classic presets from one computer to another?

To migrate presets between computers, manually copy presets from old computer and paste it in the new computer. The presets are located at the following location:

Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings

macOS: Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings

If the presets are not available at the above mentioned location or if you have specified a custom location for the presets, you can  identify the presets location by following these steps:

  1. Launch Lightroom Classic.

  2. Navigate to Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Lightroom Classic > Preference (macOS).

  3. In the Presets tab, click Show Lightroom Develop Presets.

My presets are not showing after I imported them? How do I find my missing presets?

To find your missing presets, try the following:

There are some presets which are partially compatible with the selected photo as not all of the settings of the preset can be applied to the photo. If you want to see the partially compatible presets, go to Edit Preferences Presets (Windows) or Lightroom Classic > Preference Presets (macOS) and select Show Partially Compatible Develop Presets.

Verify Store presets with this catalog setting

 If you are working with more than one catalog, you may find that your presets are missing while working with a particular catalog. This can happen if you have the Store presets with this catalog option selected in the preferences. To fix this, do the following;

  1. Launch Lightroom Classic.
  2. Open the catalog for which the preset is available.
  3. Go to Edit > Preferences > Presets (Windows) or Lightroom Classic > Preferences > Presets (macOS).
  4.  Deselect Store presets with this catalog.
  5. Click OK.

Presets can not be viewed or accessed in Presets panel unless the images are imported in Lightroom Classic or if it shows missing images.

Will my presets migrate if I update or upgrade Lightroom Classic?

Yes, your presets will migrate when you update or upgrade Lightroom Classic to the latest version.

The default Adjustment brush presets are missing. How do I restore them?

To restore your Adjustment presets, do the following:

  1. Launch Lightroom Classic.

  2. Navigate to Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Lightroom Classic > Preference (macOS).

  3. In the Presets tab, click Restore Local Adjustment Presets.

How do I import XMP presets in Lightroom 6/2015?

You cannot import XMP presets in Lightroom Classic 8.2 or earlier versions. To import presets in these versions, contact the developer for .lrtemplate presets.

My presets are not working with the JPEG. What should I do?

Make sure that the preset has a JPEG profile associated with it. Presets will not work with a JPEG file if a non-JPEG/RAW only profile is associated with the preset.
