To create an app with direct entitlement or purchase options, it’s necessary to associate Product IDs to collections. For iOS subscription apps, you must add Subscription IDs to your project.

If you are enabling in-app purchases within the app, the Product IDs you specify must match those that you specify in iTunes Connect for iOS apps or Google Play Developer Console for Android apps.

If your app includes subscriptions, the Subscription IDs you specify must match those that you specify in iTunes Connect. At this time, subscriptions are available only in iOS apps.

About Product IDs

Entitlement determines whether users have permission to access content. Entitlement is determined at the collection level, and is based on the product that is associated with the collection. Products are listed in the Products & Subscriptions section of the Portal. A product includes a Product ID and other entitlement and availability settings.

You can apply the same Product ID to multiple collections. For example, you could use the same Product ID for all free collections, or you could use the same Product ID to entitle users to a bundle of collections. However, you cannot specify more than one Product ID for a collection.

Use the Products & Subscriptions section of the Portal to create products or edit product settings.

Product Type. Indicate whether the collection associated with the product is Free (available to all users), Entitled (available only to users who sign in or make a purchase), or restricted (hidden until users sign in to become entitled.

Free. Choose Free to make all content available in the associated collection available to all users. Articles in a free collection are available even if the articles are set to Metered or Protected.

Entitled. If you choose Entitled, associated collections are visible in the app even if users are not entitled to them, but a paywall appears on protected articles, preventing users from viewing the content. The "Entitled" option is especially useful for commercial apps such as digital magazines that include purchase options. Publishers can enable Article Preview to allow users to preview content until they reach a threshold. At that point, a paywall appears to prompt users to sign in or make a purchase. For details, see Paywalls and article preview in AEM Mobile apps.

Restricted. Restricted collections are hidden until the user signs in to gain access. The "Restricted" option is primarily for corporate apps that require direct entitlement sign-in. For details, see Restricted collections in AEM Mobile apps.

If an article appears in multiple collections, users who are entitled to that article in one collection are entitled to that article in all other collections. For example, if users purchase a "Best of Italy" collection that includes an article about the Florence Duomo, they can also view the Duomo article in the other collection in which it appears, even if they haven't purchased that collection.

About Subscription IDs

Subscription IDs are required for subscription apps. At this time, only iOS apps support subscriptions. Use the Products & Subscriptions section of the Portal to create Subscription IDs that match the Product IDs specified in iTunes Connect.

You can offer two types of subscriptions: Standard or All Access.

Standard Standard subscriptions entitle subscribers to all content in which the availability date falls between the start date and end date of their subscription duration. If users stop subscribing, they still have access to that content.

All Access All Access subscriptions entitle subscribers to all content in the app while they are subscribers, regardless of availability date. If users stop subscribing, they are no longer entitled to any non-free content. An All Access subscription is similar to a movie or music subscription service.

Creating a Product ID or Subscription ID

To create products, you can either specify a Product ID while creating a collection, or you can create products in the Products & Subscriptions section of the On-Demand Portal. When you publish a collection, a product is created with the Product ID you specified for that collection if the product does not already exist.

To create subscriptions, use the Products & Subscriptions section of the Portal.

  1. Sign in to the Portal using an account that has the "Add & Edit Products and Subscriptions" permission.
  2. Click Products & Subscriptions.
  3. Click either the Products or Subscription tab.
  4. Click Create.
  5. Specify the Product ID name and specify other settings.

Product ID name

If you are selling collections or subscriptions in a store, make sure that the Product ID name you specify is identical to the Product ID specified in the store's developer site. The recommended format is com.company.appname.productname.

Examples:

com.mycompany.nwscenery.20151012 for a non-free collection

com.mycompany.nwscenery.6month for a 6-month subscription.

Product and Subscription settings

When you create or edit a Product or a Subscription, you can specify these settings.

Product Name / Subscription Name. The name you specify appears on purchase screens in the app. Examples: November 2015 or 6-Month Standard Subscription.

Product Description / Subscription Description. The description you specify appears on purchase screens in the app. Examples: Purchase the November 2015 Issue or Sign up for a 6-Month all access subscription.

Availability Date. Specifying an Availability Date is especially important for Standard subscriptions in which users are entitled to all products in which the Availability Date falls between the start date and end date of the subscription. You cannot specify an Availability Date in the future.

Make This Product Available. Users cannot view or purchase unavailable products in your app, even if the product was previously available.

The subscription purchase screen shows two subscription options. Each subscription option includes the Subscription Name, Subscription Description, and price.
