Preferences folder read-only error

Learn how to handle the Preferences folder read-only error in Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Issue

On rare occasions, you may face any of the following issues:

  • Premiere Pro or After Effects stops responding.
  • Premiere Pro or After Effects seems to intermittently slow down.
  • An error message is displayed about the Preferences folder being read-only.
  • Premiere Pro or After Effects crashes while launching or opening.
  • Premiere Pro or After Effects crashes while accessing files on your computer, such as during import or export.

Solution

Manually set the Preferences folder attributes to read-write. Follow the instructions to give read and write permissions to Adobe folders.

On Windows

Perform this procedure once for each of the following folders:

  • C:\Program Files\Adobe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe
  • C:\ProgramData\Adobe
  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Premiere Pro\<version number> - for Premiere Pro.
  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\<version number> - for After Effects.
  1. Select View from the menu at the top of the File Explorer window, and then select Hidden items.

    Display the hidden items in the folder by selecting the Hidden items option.

  2. Navigate to the folder using the paths given above.

  3. In the File Explorer window, right-click the folder and select Properties.

  4. Select the Security tab, and then select Edit to set permissions.

  5. In the Permissions dialog box, select your username. In the Permissions area, deselect the Deny checkbox.

  6. Select OK.

  7. Launch the application.

On macOS

  1. Open a new Finder window.

  2. Hold down the Option key, select the Go menu on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then select Library.

    Note:

    The library is hidden unless you hold down the Option key.

  3. Locate and open the Application Support/Adobe/Premiere Pro folder.

  4. Select the <version-number> folder, and press Command + I to get the Info window.

  5. Verify that your user account is listed in the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom of the Info window. Ensure that its Privilege is set to Read & Write.

  6. If your user account is not listed, follow these additional steps:

    a. Select the Lock icon at the bottom of the window. 

    b. Provide your user credentials when prompted.

    c. Select the + button to add your user account.

    d. Select your user account and choose Select.

    e. Change the Privilege on your user account to Read & Write by selecting Read only and changing it to Read & Write.

    f. Select the Lock icon to save the changes.

  7. If your user account is already listed but set to Read only, follow all the steps listed in Step 6, except steps c and d.

  8. For After Effects, repeat steps 1-7 for this file path - [drive]/Users/[user]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/.
