Fix memory related crash issues with Illustrator

Learn how to fix an Illustrator crash due to memory issues.

When you copy your artwork, a Not enough memory warning message appears. After you click OK, Illustrator crashes.

To fix this issue, perform the steps given below:

1. Update Illustrator to the latest version

2. Reset Illustrator preferences

macOS

Do one of the following:

  • In the Illustrator > Preferences > General dialog:
    1. Click Reset Preferences and then click OK.
    2. Restart Illustrator.
  • Press Option+Command+Shift when you start Illustrator. 

Windows

Do one of the following:

  • In the Edit > Preferences > General dialog: 
    1. Click Reset Preferences and then click OK.
    2. Restart Illustrator.
  • Press Alt+Ctrl+Shift when you start Illustrator. 

When you reset preferences, the previous preferences file is saved as Adobe Illustrator Prefs.err.

If you are unable to get to the above settings, delete the preferences folder and relaunch Illustrator.

3. Choose a Plug-ins & Scratch Disk with enough space

  1. Navigate to Preferences Plug-ins & Scratch Disk.
  2. In the Primary and Secondary lists, choose disks with enough space.

4. Update graphic card drivers and operating system
