Set In and Out points in the Source Monitor

Learn how to set In and Out points in the Source Monitor. Use it to preview and select individual clips or segments from your media files before adding them to your timeline.

When you import a video or audio file, you can use the Source Monitor to preview it and select the portions you want to use in your sequence. You can also use it to add markers, set clip In  and Out  points, and adjust various settings such as the playback speed, volume, and video and audio effects.

Open a clip in the Source Monitor

To open a clip in the Source Monitor, double-click the clip in the Project panel or Timeline panel.

You can import more than one clip in the Source Monitor. However, you can view only one clip at a time. Select the three stacked lines    next to the sequence name to view recently imported clips and choose a clip from the drop-down list.

Set In and Out points in the Source Monitor

To mark an In point: Drag the playhead to the frame you want. Then select the Mark In   button, or press the I key.

To mark an Out point: Drag the playhead to the frame you want. Then select the Mark Out button  , or press the O key.

Poznámka:

After you mark In  and Out  points, you can always adjust them before you edit the clip into the sequence by dragging them to new positions in the time ruler. You can also drag the playhead to a new frame and use the Mark In   or Mark Out   buttons to set new In or Out points.

Move In and Out point together

  1. Hover over the In or Out Grip    tool at the center of the area between your set In and Out points until the cursor turns into a hand.

  2. Hold and drag the In or Out Grip to a different position on the Source Monitor time ruler.

Poznámka:

This technique works with sequence In and Out points using the Program Monitor or a Timeline panel.

Adjusting edit points in the Source Monitor

  1. Set the In   and Out   points in the Source Monitor.

  2. Edit the clip into the Timeline.

  3. Double-click the clip to load it into the Source Monitor.

  4. Hold and drag the In or Out Grip   to a different position on the Source Monitor time ruler.

Poznámka:

Viewing in and out frames works only with clips you’ve opened in the Source Monitor from a sequence.

Cue In point and Out point

You use the Source Monitor to cue a frame for a clip and the Program Monitor to cue the current frame for a sequence.

Do one of the following:

  • Select the Go To In Point button to cue the current time to an In  point.
  • Select the Go To Out Point button to remind the current time to an Out  point.

Cue to the previous or next edit

Hold the Down Arrow key for the Go To Next Edit Point command and the Up Arrow key for the Go To Previous Edit Point command. This command works across all tracks, selected or not.

To go to the next edit in any of the targeted tracks in the Timeline, select the Go To Next Edit Point   button. To go to the previous edit in any of the targeted tracks, select the Go To Previous Edit Point   button.

The Go To Next Edit Point   and Go To Previous Edit Point   buttons are unavailable by default. You can find these buttons in the Button Editor. It’s present in the lower right corner of the Source Monitor.

Remove In or Out point of a source clip

  1. Double-click a clip in the Project panel to open it in the Source Monitor

  2. Choose from the following three options:

    • Marker > Clear In.
    • Marker > Clear Out.
    • Marker > Clear In and Out.
Poznámka:

Timeline clip instances are not the same as source clips. It isn't possible to remove In or Out points from timeline clips that have been loaded into the Source Monitor.
