User Dictionaries missing in InDesign 20.0 and later versions

Issue

[macOS only] User Dictionaries created from 19.3 and lower versions are missing in 20.0 and later as InDesign has dropped the HFS Path Support.

An alert informing the users about the missing user dictionaries.

Apple has phased out HFS (Hierarchical File System) paths in macOS versions 10.0-10.9. Starting from the 20.0 release, InDesign has stopped supporting HFS paths and only supports POSIX-style (Portable Operating System Interface) paths to ensure compatibility with future macOS updates.

HFS to POSIX Migration History

  • By default, InDesign 19.3 supported HFS Path Styles but developers could enable POSIX Support through Cookies.
  • Since InDesign 19.4, POSIX Path Styles was enabled by default. Developers/partners can still choose to work with HFS Path through Cookies.
  • From InDesign 20.0 onwards, POSIX Path Styles will be enabled by default, and HFS Path Support will be stopped.
