(Win only) You may encounter delay in startup of Photoshop on your Windows machine.

As a workaround, do the following:

  1. Re-boot your Windows Image Acquisition properties (WIA)
  2. Open WIA properties, and change Startup Type  from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed Start)

Scratch disks full errors

Unable to browse in Bridge from Photoshop

Issue

Workaround

Bridge does not launch when you click File > Browse In Bridge option from within Photoshop.

As a workaround, do the following:

  1. Uninstall Bridge and Photoshop from your machine.
  2. Rename the below-mentioned DB folders:
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD
    2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\caps
  3. Install both Bridge and Photoshop again which you uninstalled in Step 1.

You can also try switching to Bridge from Photoshop using Alt+Tab keys. However, this is not supported on Mac ARM.

Unable to import .sky files

Issue

Workaround

(Win only) When the Sky Replacement is open, dragging a .sky file into an empty spot in the tab margin does not trigger the import. The import works on macOS but not on Windows.

As a workaround, you can do any of the following to import a .sky package into a Windows system:

  • Dropping the .sky file onto the empty window in Photoshop should trigger the import of sky presets from the file.
  • If there are open documents, dropping the .sky file onto an empty spot in the tab margin should trigger the import.
  • If there are open documents, dropping the .sky file onto an open document should trigger the import.
  • If Photoshop is closed, dropping the .sky file onto the Photoshop icon should launch the app, and then trigger the import.

Green screen display error

Issue

Workaround

You may encounter the Green screen error when Photoshop is running and you switch screen resolutions (attach or remove the second monitor of a different resolution).

As a workaround, do any of the following:

  • Click the green dot on the document or application window to resize the window to fit the current screen.
  • Quit/restart Photoshop
  • Go to Preferences > Technology Previews and enable Deactivate Native Canvas. Restart Photoshop.

Photoshop freezes when starting up in macOS Big Sur and the splash screen displays "Loading Halide Bottlenecks..."

Camera Raw errors opening files

Issue

Solution

You see one of the following errors when opening images with Camera Raw 13.x:

  • "File is not found"
  • "There is no api-ms-win-core-synch-ansi-|1-1-0.dll on your comupter"

This is due to OS incompatibility with ACR 13.0.

Check the Camera Raw system requirements and install a previous version of Camera Raw that is compatible with your Operating System.

Error at loading of ippCV library

Issue

Workaround

When you launch Photoshop 2021 (v22.x) you see one of the following errors:

  • Error at loading of ippCV library.
  • error: (-215:Assertion failed)

Photoshop 2021 (v22.x) requires a CPU that supports SSE 4.2 or later.

To determine if your CPU meets this SSE version support requirement, see Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog and look in or near the 4th line.

  1. e.g. Adobe Photoshop Version: 22.0.0 20200921.m.1053 2020/09/21: 0fb66349f4  x64
  2. Number of Launches: 6
  3. Operating System: Mac OS 10.15.5
  4. System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:14, Stepping:3 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, HyperThreading

Starting with Photoshop 22.1.1, you will no longer be able to install Photoshop on machines that do not support SSE v4.2 or later.

Install and use Photoshop 2020 (v21.x) on computers with older CPUs that don't support SSE v4.2 or later.

Painting

A number of painting/tablet related issues have been addressed in recent updates. For a complete list, see Fixed issues in Photoshop. Update to the latest version for these fixes.

Issue

Workaround

In Photoshop 21.1.1 and later, pen pressure is lost after returning to your Photoshop document from a CEP Extensions panel.

(Windows 10 with Windows Ink enabled)

Click on the document or the Tool bar.

To learn about recommended settings for using Wacom tablets with Photoshop, see Tablet support for Photoshop.

Tools

Issue

Workaround

The Quick Selection tool is not visible in the toolbar.

The new Object Selection tool is the default tool in the same tool slot as Quick Selection and Magic Wand.

Click and hold on the Object Selection tool to reveal and select the other tools in the slot.

After updating to a new version of Photoshop the toolbar doesn't include newer tools such as the Frame tool or the Object Selection tool.

Restore the toolbar customization to its default state or customize the toolbar to include the missing tools. See Tools missing from the toolbar.

KBSC (introduced in Photoshop 20.0) to erase while using the Brush tool doesn't work with a German keyboard since there is no Tilde-key beneath the Escape key on a German keyboard.

If you want to use this KBSC, switch system language to English, switch Photoshop language to English, and use an English-default keyboard.

Type layers (Text)

Issue

Workaround

Unable to select numbers in Right-To-Left mode when the composer is set to World-Ready Layout with Middle Eastern Features enabled.

In the Paragraph panel, change the paragraph direction to Left-To-Right, select and edit the numbers, then change the direction back to Right-To-Left.

3D

Issue

Workaround

Photoshop may crash after closing a 3D document without saving.

Restore Photoshop's preferences to default and try again.

In Photoshop 22.4 (May 2021), use of 3D features (Text extrusion, Lighting Effects, Normal Map and Bump Map filters) may not update the screen properly or render the correct results.

We recommend using the Tech Preview option for overriding Photoshop’s native canvas mode to continue to use the 3D features.

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews, and check the item Deactivate Native Canvas, then restart Photoshop.

In Photoshop 22.4 (May 2021), you may notice irregular color artifacts in your 3D document.

This could happen if you create or edit a document while using the Deactivate Native Canvas override, then switch back to normal mode to view the file. The color artifact is not saved to the file and is only a display aberration.

Turn off/on visibility of that layer to reset it.

In Photoshop 21.1, 3D shadows are only partly rendered.

  1. Select the mesh group.
  2. In the Properties panel, click Reset All.
  3. Select a 3D Camera tool and move the camera.
  4. Render the 3D model again.

In Photoshop 20.x and higher:

  • OpenGL on canvas  > Model may look different.
  • Material model > Model may render different.

The 3D Material model in Photoshop has changed and it is transitioning to the 3D material model used by Substance and Dimension

  • OpenGL on canvas  > Model may look different.
  • Material model > Model may render different.

The Ray Tracer has not changed, however, the material model has changed and Photoshop tries to match previous versions as close as possible. However, there will be files that will no longer look the same because how Photoshop handles certain materials differently.

For example > Photoshop went from Specular-Glossiness to Metal -Roughness

Photoshop is moving to Physically Based Rendering (PBR) > this is a method of shading and rendering that provides a more accurate representation of how light interacts with surfaces.

To make a Reflection in previous versions you just had to move the Reflection slider to 100%.

For current Photoshop in 2019 and above you need to move the Metallic slider to 100% and move the Roughness slider to 0% for full 100% Reflectivity.

Illumination is gone but Glow is now included.

These visual changes are expected with the changes to the Material Model.

3D volume feature producing incorrect results for text layers.

The issue is intermittent and related to GPU resources. Try restarting your computer.

Other known issues

Issue

Workaround

When you launch Photoshop, it freezes either at the splash screen displaying 'Loading Halide Bottlenecks...' or freezes/crashes during startup.
