How to create a SCORM package in Adobe Captivate

Applies to Adobe Captivate | Adobe Captivate Classic

Introduction

Adobe Captivate enables authors to publish SCORM‑compliant eLearning packages that can be delivered through industry‑standard Learning Management Systems (LMS). When publishing a project for LMS delivery, Adobe Captivate generates a ZIP package that contains the course content, media assets, JavaScript files, and the LMS manifest file required for tracking learner activity.

This article explains how SCORM packaging works in Adobe Captivate, including how to enable reporting, select an appropriate LMS standard, and publish a package that an LMS can successfully import and track. Adobe Captivate supports commonly used LMS formats such as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, and xAPI, allowing organizations to align course output with their LMS reporting and compliance requirements.

SCORM packages created in Adobe Captivate are used when learner progress, completion status, or assessment results need to be recorded by an LMS. Correct configuration of reporting and format selection is essential, as LMS behavior varies by platform and standard. Understanding these options before publishing helps ensure that courses launch correctly and that learner data is reported as expected.

When SCORM packaging is the right option

SCORM packaging is typically used when:

  • Courses must be delivered through an LMS rather than as standalone files
  • Learner completion status or assessment outcomes must be tracked
  • A standard LMS upload format (ZIP + manifest) is required for validation and reporting

Select the correct LMS standard (SCORM 1.2 vs SCORM 2004 vs AICC vs xAPI)

  • SCORM 1.2: widely supported across LMS platforms; common default where the LMS doesn’t specify otherwise
  • SCORM 2004: used when the LMS explicitly requires it
  • AICC: typically used only for legacy LMS requirements
  • xAPI: used when the LMS/LRS workflow requires xAPI rather than SCORM
Important

The selection should match the standard supported by your LMS.

Create a SCORM package

  1. Select Adobe Captivate on the top toolbar and select Preferences.

    Select Preferences menu
Access Preferences from the Adobe Captivate menu to begin configuring SCORM reporting settings for your course.

  2. In the Preferences dialog, select Quizzing > Reporting. Select the Enable Reporting checkbox.

    Select the Enable Reporting checkbox
Preferences dialog with Reporting enabled and SCORM standard selected, with OK button highlighted.

  3. Adobe Captivate supports SCORM  1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, and xAPI formats. Select the format supported by your LMS and select OK.

    Select the SCORM standard
Preferences dialog showing Reporting settings with SCORM standard dropdown and OK button highlighted.

  4. Publish the course.

    Publish the course
Captivate Publish dialog showing Publish to My Computer option with project title, output folder, and Publish button.

When you publish your course, Adobe Captivate generates an HTML file and a SCORM package (ZIP file) containing all the necessary course files, including HTML, media assets, JavaScript files, and the SCORM manifest file.

What the published ZIP package includes

A published Captivate SCORM ZIP package contains:

  • HTML launch content
  • Media assets used in the project
  • JavaScript files required for runtime behavior
  • A SCORM manifest file (used by the LMS to validate and track the package)

This is the package that is uploaded into an LMS for delivery and tracking.

Troubleshooting

The LMS rejects the ZIP package

  • Confirm the selected format matches what the LMS supports (SCORM 1.2 / SCORM 2004 / AICC / xAPI).
  • Publish again to ensure the ZIP includes the required package contents (HTML + assets + JavaScript + manifest).

The course publishes, but tracking doesn’t work as expected

  • Confirm Enable Reporting is selected in Quizzing > Reporting.
  • Confirm the LMS standard is correct for your LMS (the page explicitly instructs selecting the format supported by the LMS).
