To enable the use of embedded index to search PDFs, you have to create a registry key (Windows), or create an entry in the FeatureLockdown.plist file (macOS) as mentioned below.

Create a registry key on Windows

  1. Quit Acrobat DC/Acrobat Reader DC application if it's already running.

  2. In Start > Search, type RegEdit and press Enter. The Registry Editor is displayed.

  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\(product name)\(version)\FeatureLockDown.

For example, the path for Acrobat DC is LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\FeatureLockDown.

  4. Create the following key:

    Key: bToggleUseEmbeddedIndex

    Data type: REG_DWORD

    Default Value: 0

    Note:

The embedded index is not used while searching when the default value of the key is  0.

To enable use of embedded index, set the value of the key to 1.

  5. Close Registry Editor.

Edit the FeatureLockDown.plist file on macOS

  1. Quit Acrobat DC/Acrobat Reader DC application if it's already running.

  2. Navigate to the folder /Library/Preferences.

  3. Open the com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist file in any plist editor. If you don't find the plist file, create a file of type Property List with the name 'com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro' using any plist editor.

  4. Create the following entry in the FeatureLockDown key:

    Key: bToggleUseEmbeddedIndex

    Lock Path: FeatureLockdown

    Type: 0 (bool)

    Default  Value: 0

Create the bToggleUseEmbeddedIndex key in Feature Lockdown

    Note:

The embedded index is not used while searching when the default value of the key is  0.

To enable use of embedded index, set the value of the key to 1.

  5. Save the com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist file.
