Relink, replace, or update linked files

Last updated on 31 Aug 2026

Learn how to relink missing files individually or as a group, replace and update linked assets, and relink all instances of an image using the Links panel.

When a linked file is missing, needs to be replaced, or is modified, use the Links panel to fix it.

Relink or replace a missing file

When a file shows Missing Link, its source is no longer in its original location. Relink it from your computer or Creative Cloud Libraries, replace it with a different file, or or relink multiple missing files from the same folder at once.

In the Links panel, select the file that shows Missing Link.

Select Relink, or Relink from CC Libraries if the source is in Creative Cloud Libraries.

Locate and select the file you want to use.

From the Replace menu, choose one of the following options:

  • Each Link Separately to select a different file for each link.
  • Selected Instances to relink the selected instance.
  • All Instances to relink all instances of the selected link.
  • Missing Links from This Folder to automatically relink other missing files found in the same folder.

Relink all instances of a linked image

When the same linked image appears multiple times in a document, you don't have to relink each copy. Relink any instance, and all matching instances that reference the same linked source file are updated automatically.

Update a modified link

When a file shows Update Available in the Links panel, its source has changed. Update the link to bring in the latest version.

In the Links panel, select the file that shows Update Available.

Select Update Link.
