Learn how to extend your image beyond its original boundaries using Generative Expand in Photoshop Elements.
Generative Expand uses Adobe Firefly to intelligently generate new content that blends naturally with your existing image.
Do one of the following:
- Open the AI mode and select Generative Expand.
- or in the Quick, or Advanced room, select the Generative Expand tool from the toolbar.
- or select Edit > Generative Expand.
- or in the Guided workspace, use the Extend Background Guided Edit under Special Edits.
Drag the crop handles outward to expand the canvas and create the area you want to fill, or select an Aspect Ratio from the dropdown menu. No Restriction is selected by default. For a custom canvas size, select Custom, and then enter the Expand width (W) and height (H) values.
In the Model dropdown menu, Firefly Fill & Expand is selected by default.
(Optional) In the Prompt textbox, enter a description of the content you want to generate.

The Prompt option is available only in the AI and Advanced workspaces.
Click on Generate.
Review the three generated variations. The first variation is selected and applied automatically. Select another variation to apply it to your image. To create more variations without changing the current settings, select Generate again.
Note
Select the three-dot menu on a variation to Generate Similar, Delete Variation, or Give Feedback.
The newly generated content is seamlessly blended with the original image, extending the composition beyond its original canvas.

Generative Expand uses generative credits. Each generation consumes credits. Select the Credit balance icon to view your available credits. Photoshop Elements 27 includes 25 generative credits per month, while the PEPE 27 bundle (Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements) includes 100 generative credits per month. If you run out of credits, you can wait for your monthly credits to reset or purchase a Firefly plan for additional credits.
