AR Visual Design Best Practices

Learn tips, tricks, & best practices for creating successful visual designs in augmented reality.

  • Designing for the viewport: Since these experiences will be viewed through a mobile device, it’s important to think about scale and framing. Sometimes, smaller compositions will read more clearly.
  • Your participant’s height: You will want to consider your target audience and how tall they are, so you can create an experience that they can easily see.
  • Creating readable text: In order to ensure readability, consider using bold fonts, outlines, outer glow, or backgrounds to offset the text from the surrounding world.
  • Combating clutter: Editing, timing things independently, and relaying only what is needed when it is needed will create a much clearer experience for a participant.
  • Scale & Proximity: Our brains are built to navigate a 3D world, so we inherently understand how large or small,  near or far an object is from our bodies. This makes scale and proximity two really powerful tools in AR.

  • How to use design principles when designing spatial experiences: There is a wealth of preexisting visual design knowledge that we can leverage to create more successful AR experiences. The key is to create clear visual hierarchies, so your participant always knows where to look.
  • Contrast: One of the primary tools in your arsenal is contrast. It could be contrast in color, value, shape, scale, etc.
  • Negative Space: Negative space is another way of creating visual contrast. When you surround something with nothing, you can’t help but look at the something in the middle of it all.
  • Movement: Movement is another powerful way to use contrast in 3d space.
  • Project Walk-Through: I walked through a recent project of mine to illustrate how layering these visual design techniques can create clearer spatial experiences.
