Mark up with redlining tools

Learn how to use redlining tools to mark up and review documents with clear, visible edits and comments.

Acrobat on the web provides the following commenting and markup features to track and highlight changes on a document:

  • Highlight: Emphasizes specific portions of text by changing its background color.
  • Strikethrough: Indicates text that should be removed by drawing a line through it.
  • Underline: Adds a line beneath selected text to show emphasis or changes.
  • Insert text: Allows you to add new text to the document.
  • Replace text: Allows you to propose replacements for existing text.
  • Add comments: Adds comments in a small pop-up window that can be placed anywhere on the document.
  • Draw: Includes tools for freehand drawing, lines, and shapes to mark or annotate the document.
  1. On the Acrobat on the web homepage, select Documents.

  2. Choose the appropriate category from the left pane, then select the document where you want to markup.

  3. Select the text you’d like to mark up.

    Selected text shows Context menu with tools to copy, edit, format, highlight, strikethrough, or underline the selected text.
    To markup content in a PDF, select the area you’d like to review and then choose the appropriate tool from the context menu.

  4. From the floating toolbar that appears, use the appropriate redlining tool to take any of the following actions:

    • To highlight the text, select Highlight .
    • To underline the text, select Underline .
    • To strikethrough the text, select Strikethrough .
    • To suggest text replacement, from the Quick Actions toolbar, select Add comments  > Replace selected text, and then enter the suggested text in the box that appears.
    • To add freehand drawings, from the Quick Actions toolbar, select Draw and then use the pen cursor to make drawings.
    • To insert text, from the Quick Actions toolbar, select Add comments  > Insert text, and then enter the text in the box that appears.

    Selecting the ‘Insert text’ tool displays a text box where you can add suggested text.

  5. In the Comments pane that appears, type your comment and select Post.

    To add a markup without any comment, select anywhere on the document to dismiss the comment tool.

  6. To edit the color of the markup, select it and then select color-icon from the context menu. Then, choose any color from the Color panel.

    Selected markup displays the context menu with options to change the color, add comments, or delete.
    You can change the color of the markup using the color panel in the context menu. To delete a markup, select it and then select the delete icon from the context menu.

Result

The markups that you add to the PDF file are automatically saved.
