Use reference images for consistent results

Learn how to use Reference Image to guide image generation for consistent composition in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Generate with Adobe Firefly models

With an active selection, select Generative Fill .

Select Reference image  from the Contextual Task Bar.

Select Choose image, then upload the image you want Photoshop to reference.

Select Adobe models > Firefly Fill & Expand.

Set how the reference is used:

  • Reference to:
    • Object: References a single subject.
    • Whole image: References the entire scene.
  • Intent:
    • Swap the selected area: Replaces an existing object in the selected area.
    • Place into the selected area: Adds an object while preserving the background.

Select Generate .

Generate with Partner AI models

With an active selection, select Generative Fill .

Select Partner models, then enter a detailed prompt. 

After entering a prompt, the Reference image   panel appears. Upload your images to guide generation with Flux (up to 3 images) or Gemini (up to 6).

Select Generate .
