With Generative Remove, powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI, you can easily remove distractions and unwanted objects in a photo. Once you identify and highlight an object using the brush mask, Adobe Firefly automatically removes it and generates a fill that blends with the rest of the frame.
You can try using the Generative Remove feature in Lightroom for mobile (iOS) and Lightroom for mobile (Android). For more information on Generative Remove, see Generative Remove FAQ and best practices.
The Heal panel in Lightroom has been renamed to Remove. You can access the Remove, Heal, Clone, and Red Eye tools in the Remove panel.

In Lightroom, you can select:
- Generative AI - Currently available as Early Access, this feature can remove unwanted objects using Adobe Firefly generative AI. You need to be connected to the internet to access this feature.
- Object Aware - Use this to manually brush over and mask an object you want to remove.
Generative AI and Object Aware can be used together to select and refine photos.
Use Generative AI to remove distractions in Lightroom
The Generative AI option in the Remove tool uses Adobe Firefly to effectively remove distractions in a photo. This new feature in Lightroom is perfect for removing unwanted objects like vehicles, signboards, poles, and more, even on complex backgrounds.

Brush over the object that you want to remove. You can adjust the brush Size and Opacity of the Overlay to make a precise selection.

Once you have brushed over the object and its shadow, use the Refine controls to make the following selections:
- Add - Add more objects to the selection.
- Subtract - Delete objects from the selection.
You can also access the Size slider in the Refine menu.

Lightroom uses Adobe Firefly to generate three different variation options for you. You can also select Refresh to develop three new variations.

Select as necessary:
- Show Overlay on Hover - This helps you view the mask overlay when you hover over an image.
- Visualize Spots - This helps you visualize spots to make accurate selections. You can also adjust the Threshold using the amount slider.

Use Object Aware remove in Lightroom
The Object Aware option allows you to remove an object by brushing over it. Unlike Generative AI, Object Aware replaces the masked object with borrowed pixels from the same image. You can use Object Aware for objects on simple backgrounds.

Turn on the Object Aware toggle in the Remove tool.

Brush over the object that you want to remove. You can adjust the brush Size and Opacity of the Overlay to make a precise selection.

Once you have brushed over the object, use the Refine controls to make the following selections:
- Add - Add more objects to the selection.
- Subtract - Delete objects from the selection.
You can adjust the brush Size in the Refine menu and change the Overlay color.

Lightroom will analyze the image and select the source area, by default. If you wish to change the source area, use Cmd+drag (on MacOS) or Ctrl+drag (on Windows) over the photo.

Select the Refresh option to fill the area with new content.
